Week in Review
The Yellowjackets traveled west for two tough GNAC road games
last weekend. They kicked off the week at 3rd-ranked
Seattle Pacific and gave the unbeaten Falcons a battle before
falling 1-0. On Saturday, MSUB stopped a three-game
winless streak with a 3-1 victory at Northwest Nazarene.
It was the Jackets' first conference road win since joining the
GNAC.
The weekend split left MSUB at 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the
conference. The Jackets are tied for third in the league
with Western Washington. Seattle Pacific seems to be
running away with the GNAC crown after defeating both MSUB and
Seattle University last weekend. The Falcons are 12-0-0
overall and 6-0-0 in the conference. Seattle is just a
game behind at 5-1-0 followed by MSUB and WWU at 3-2-1.
Third-ranked Seattle Pacific used a first half goal to
defeat Montana State Billings 1-0 Thursday night.
|
Fenwick |
The Falcons’ Sarah Martinez, the top scorer
in the GNAC, took a long pass from Meredith Teague in the 29th
minute, made a cutback move and drilled her 13th goal of the
season past Yellowjacket keeper Jordan
Fenwick. That was all the Falcons needed to
notch their 11th-straight win.
Fenwick did more than her share to keep the
Yellowjackets in the game. Seattle Pacific out-shot MSU
Billings 26-1 in the game, including 18-0 shots on goal.
Fenwick made 17 saves, the fourth-highest single game total in
school history. She fended off the Falcons with eight first
half saves and nine saves in the second half.
The Yellowjackets’ lone shot in the game
came from
Caitlyn
Marrer in the second half. Nine different
Falcons fired off at least one shot at Fenwick with Martinez
taking nine shots.
"Jordan obviously kept us in the game and
gave us a chance," said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.
"She made a lot of good saves and commanded the box.
Unfortunately we didn't create enough offense. Only having
one shot isn't going to cut it. I thought the defense
played well, and Jordan played well. There were times when
we created some possession, but we didn't get anything in our
attack."
A pair of goals from senior
Brittney Sandau lifted MSU Billings to the 3-1 win at
Northwest Nazarene on Saturday. Sandau opened the scoring just
15:15 into the contest when she took a pass from younger sister
Samantha and beat Crusaders keeper Amanda Peters.
“I think we played a pretty solid game
defensively and did some things in the attack to create some
goals,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham. “We had good
goalkeeping play, and were able to put all the pieces together
and play a solid 90 minutes. This was a good win on the road
against a quality opponent in the conference.”
The Crusaders knotted the game at 1-1 just
five minutes into the second half on a Hannah Mohs goal, her
third of the season. The tie was short-lived, however. In the
53rd minute, Peters missed a clearing pass from one of her
defenders. Sandau raced
past her to get to the ball and deposit it into the net for her seventh
goal of the season.
The Jackets added an insurance goal in the
80th minute when
Jelisa Guy won a tackle and laced a tough pass to
Danielle Ritter, who netted her third goal of
the season.
Jordan
Fenwick earned her first collegiate win in
goal, making six saves and allowing just one goal. She made 23
saves during the two-game road trip. Peters finished with five
saves.
“Brittney did a good job of scoring some
goals for us,” said Trentham, “but it was a great team effort.
Any time you can get a win on the road it’s important. With
eight of our first 11 games away from home, we’re excited to get
back to Billings. It will be good to have six of our last nine
games in Billings. We’re hoping we can build on this and string
some wins together.”
Record Watch:
Sandau's two goals in the win at NNU--her fourth career
multi-goal game--gave her seven for the season and 27 for
her career. She is three behind Margot Merrill-Johnson
for third on the all-time goals list at the school.
Her game winner at NNU was the eighth of her career, three
behind Merrill-Johnson for second in school history.
Ally Stroup holds both records with 40 career goals and 12
career game winning goals....Along with tying Rachel Green
in the school record books for the fourth-most saves in a
game, Fenwick posted one of the biggest games in goal this
decade. The other five entries over 15 saves in the
record book all happened before 2000. The last time a
Yellowjacket made more than 15 saves in a game was when
Gretchen Kaus made 20 against Humboldt State on Oct. 29,
1999.

GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK:
Jocelyn Charette, Seattle
Pacific (F, 5-10, So., Lakewood, WA) and Teresa Fish,
Western Washington (GK, 5-7, Sr., Snohomish, WA - Monroe). .
.Charette, a transfer from the University of Tampa, was a
key component in the Falcons’ 2-1 over Seattle University
Saturday, earning an assist on Shannon Oakes’ first-half
goal and then getting the game-winner in overtime. She had
a team-high five shots including a free kick in the second
half that forced a diving save by Redhawk keeper Kaitlyn
Jackson. She also took three shots in SPU’s 1-0 shutout of
Montana State Billings on Thursday. . .Fish had eight saves
in posting two shutouts – her 26th and 27th
of her career – in 3-0 and 4-0 road wins at Western Oregon
and Saint Martin’s. Fish, who has seven shutouts this
season, is now the GNAC’s all-time career leader. She
previously shared the record of 25 with Seattle Pacific’s
Jennifer Hull (2001-04).
HONORABLE MENTION: Claire Morgan, Western Washington
(F, 5-7, Fr., Bellingham, WA) had a goal and three assists
in the Vikings’ two victories. Her three assists all came
against Saint Martin’s as she tied the WWU school and GNAC
single-game record for most assists. She is the ninth
player in conference history to accomplish the feat which
has been done 10 times, including twice by Ashley Porter.
Three of the occurrences have been this season. . .Brittney
Sandau, Montana State Billings (5-4, Sr., Billings, MT –
West) had two of the Yellowjackets’ three goals in a 3-1 win
at Northwest Nazarene, its first conference road victory of
the season. The goals were Sandau's sixth and seventh of the
season and 26th and 27th of her career. She is currently
fourth in school history for both career goals and career
points.
AROUND THE
GNAC: Sarah Martinez equaled the GNAC career record
with her 45th career goal in Seattle Pacific’s
home win over Montana State Billings. Nichole Sauvageau
also had 45 goals for Seattle University between 1999 and
2002. Martinez has 109 career points, two short of the
conference record held by SPU’s Shannon Lovejoy (2002-05). .
.Kara Kuttler and Jasmine Wilson scored goals as Seattle
University split a pair of one-goal decisions beating
Northwest Nazarene 1-0 before losing to SPU. . .Central
Washington’s Amber Easterbrook extended her string of
consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to 327:21 before
Jill Petersen scored in overtime in Western Oregon’s 1-0 win
Sunday. Easterbrook’s streak included shutout wins over MSU
Billings and Saint Martin’s. She had eight saves against
SMU and WOU before allowing the game-winner. On Thursday,
Kelsey Penn scored CWU’s game-winner against Saint
Martin’s. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the
season and her second game-winner. . .Jordan Fenwick had 17
saves in Montana State Billings’ 1-0 loss at SPU. Her
total is the second most in GNAC history and the most-ever
in a game decided by three or fewer goals. . .Hannah Mohs
had Northwest Nazarene’s lone goal in a pair of home losses
to Seattle and MSU Billings. . .Saint Martin’s keepers
Michelle Donachie (11) and Breanna Klasen (10) combined for
21 saves in a pair of home losses. The Saints have now lost
seven straight since their lone win on Sept. 1 against Notre
Dame de Namur.

The Coaches
Don Trentham, Head Coach
Don
Trentham enters his sixth year as head women’s soccer coach at
MSU Billings in 2007. Under Trentham’s
direction the program has gone 44-39-7.
He is the winningest coach in the history of the
program in terms of both total wins and winning percentage, and his teams have posted the only three winning season in team
history.
Trentham attended Columbia College (Missouri) and played for head coach
Dan Hogan, who is now head coach at University of Southern Indiana. At
Columbia he was part of an NAIA program that was consistently ranked in
the top-20, won two conference tournament championships and twice
advanced to the regional tournament. In his senior year, the team
finished 17-5 and was ranked ninth in the nation.
It
was during his playing days at Columbia when Trentham began coaching.
He was head coach of two teams for the Columbia Pride Soccer Club and
was assistant camp director for Columbia College Soccer Camps during the
summer. In 1998 the Missouri Youth Soccer Association honored Trentham
as the Boys’ Coach of the Year.
Trentham began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at
Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida where he had the
chance to work two seasons with one of the finest soccer tacticians in
the country – David Gregson.
At Embry-Riddle he assisted in guiding the team to a #16
NAIA National Ranking in the final poll of 1999 season, two NAIA
Regional Tournament appearances and a Florida Sun Conference regular
season championship.
"I've been very fortunate to have played for and coached with two great
people," says Trentham. "Much of what I learned about the game came
from Coach Hogan and David Gregson. Had it not been for those guys, I
don't know if I'd be coaching today."
Aside from his head coaching duties with the team at MSU Billings,
Trentham also plays an active role in developing players throughout
the state and the region. Over the past two years he has served as
the u13 and u14 girls head coach for the Magic City Soccer Club,
guiding each team he has coached to Montana State Championships. In
the past he has also coached in the Olympic Development Program
serving as the ODP girl's head coach for Montana, as well as an ODP
staff coach for Region IV. Furthermore, he holds many camps,
clinics, tournaments, and leagues during the course of the year for
both adult and youth players throughout the state.
Trentham earned his bachelor of arts in education from Columbia
College and a master's of education in sport management from East
Stroudsburg University. He holds an "A" license from the United
States Soccer Federation, as well as an Advanced National license
from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Ally Stroup, Assistant Coach
The
2007 season will be Stroup’s first as the Yellowjackets’
women’s assistant soccer coach. She is a 2007 graduate from MSU
Billings, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology with a minor
in coaching and graduating cum laude.
“Ally is a great addition to the coaching staff here at MSUB,” said
Director of Soccer and Head Women’s Coach Don Trentham. “She had a
terrific career and a major impact here as a player, and I am confident
she will have as big an impact, if not bigger, on our program as a
coach. She knows the game very well and has a tremendous passion for
MSUB soccer, and it will be exciting to see her pass on her knowledge
and passion to the players in the program.”
As a player, Stroup was a four year starter and two-time captain for
the Yellowjackets. Her freshmen season she was named to the NSCAA/adidas
All-West Region Second Team. As a junior, she received the following
honors: MSU Billings Most Valuable Student-Athlete, Heartland
All-Conference Team, Scholar-Athlete by her teammates, and ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District VII Second Team. For her senior season,
she received the following honors: ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District VII Second Team, Dakrtonics All-Midwest Region Team,
Scholar-Athlete and MVP by her teammates, NSCAA/adidas College Scholar
All-West Region Team, NSCAA/adidas Women’s Soccer Scholar All-America
College Division First Team.
At one point during her senior season, the team was ranked No. 1 in
the Midwest Region and ranked nationally in the top 10. Stroup finished
her MSU Billings career as the school record holder for career goals,
assists, points, game winning goals, and games started.
Stroup plans to begin her Masters of Science in Rehabilitation and
Mental Health Counseling at MSU Billings in the spring of 2008. She is
married to Garret Stroup, a 2006 graduate of MSU Billings. |
