Yellowjackets Blank Great Falls in Exhibition Soccer, 4-0
GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Four first half goals sparked the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team to a 4-0 exhibition victory over host University of Great Falls Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Yellowjackets finish the exhibition season with a 1-0-1 record after a 1-1 tie at the University of Montana Saturday.
“I am very excited by the way we have looked in the two exhibition games and our first week of practice,” head coach Don Trentham said. “There were a lot of positives in these two games, in addition to seeing some things that need to be perfected heading into our first regular season game versus Cal State San Bernardino.”
The Yellowjackets started five freshmen versus the Argos on Sunday as they were led by two goals from freshman Jen Larsen, while fellow freshman, Jaucelyn Richter, tallied two assists on the day. Larsen finishes the exhibition season with three goals in two games and Richter finishes with three assists on the weekend.
The first goal came as Kari Foreman found an open Larsen on a through ball for a 1-0 lead. Foreman then put the Jackets up 2-0 as she dribbled through the box and battled to the goal around a couple of Argo defenders.
Carly Valentine got into the act as she made a nice run from midfield and connected on a pass from Richter for a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal came as Samantha Sandau crossed a ball to Richter who dished it outside the box to Larsen for the score and a 4-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets return home to prepare for the regular season as they open at the Dixie State Tournament, Aug. 29, versus Cal State San Bernardino. MSUB opens the home slate with the Seventh Annual MSU Billings Cup, Friday, Sept. 4, against Colorado Christian at 1 p.m.
