FAIRBANKS, Alaska – After
stumbling in game one, the Montana State Billings volleyball
team surged back to win Thursday’s Great Northwest Athletic
Conference match against the University of Alaska Fairbanks
20-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-26. The Jackets improved to 10-3
overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Nanooks fell to
7-5 and 1-3.
Fairbanks used a
blistering attack, hitting .500 in game one to jump out to
the lead over the Lady Jackets. In game two MSUB
reorganized, and after a brief 6-6 tie, the Jackets pulled
away from the Nanooks to knot the match at one game apiece.
Game three was a battled
from wire to wire as both teams exchanged the lead four
times before the Lady Jackets were finally able to pull away
from Fairbanks after the game was tied at 22. Game four was
no different in that Fairbanks stayed within three points of
the lead throughout the entire match before the
Yellowjackets were able to put the game away.
Four Yellowjackets had
double digit kills and were led by Devon
Crotteau’s (Casper, Wyo.) 18 kills. Alicia Cazemier (Vauxhall, Alberta) hit
a fiery .414. Cazemier had 16 kills off 29 attempts and
only had four hitting errors. Freshman Jennifer
Boe (Casper, Wyo.) posted a double-double tying her
career-high of 15 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Lechner (Pompeys Pillar) also had a big night
for the Jackets putting away 10 kills off 20 attempts to
lead the Lady Jackets with a .500 attack percentage.
Lechner was also in on three blocks.
The Nanooks were led by
Megan Thigpen’s double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs.
Jessica Hill contributed 12 kills.
The Lady Jackets are set
to duel Alaska Anchorage (4-5, 0-3) in conference action on
Saturday, Sept. 22 before returning to Billings to host GNAC
favorite Western Washington University (7-4, 3-1) on
Thursday, Sept. 27. The conference match is scheduled
for 7 p.m. A live video stream of the match
