RICHLAND, Wash. – Just as with the previous
two days, the Montana State Billings softball team split a pair
of games Saturday on the third day of the CWU Invitational,
losing to St. Martin’s 4-2 and beating host Central Washington
5-1. The
Yellowjackets improve to 5-6 on the season and 3-3 for the
tournament.
Saint Martin’s scored the first run of the
game in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a pair of
doubles. SMU left
the bases loaded in the inning as Yellowjacket hurler Lisa Moore
(1-3) got out of the jam with just the one run scored
MSUB evened the score in the top of the third
with a solo home run by Leslie Davis.
The Yellowjackets had the opportunity to plate a couple
more runs, but were unable to get anything more across.
A leadoff double by SMU in the bottom half of
the inning and a bases loaded walk broke the 1-1 tie.
In the fourth inning the Saints added the insurance run
with a home run, followed by another home run in the fifth.
MSUB’s Terina Stacks had a RBI single in the
sixth to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Saints closed the door
and the Jackets went down in order in the seventh.
Davis led the team going 2 for 4 with a run
and a RBI. Moore
went four and one third innings, allowing seven hits, four
earned runs, four walks and she punched out four.
Rebekah Tsatsa came in relief for one and two thirds
innings, allowing one hit and had one strikeout.
The Yellowjackets rebounded in the second
game with a 5-1 victory over host Central Washington.
MSUB scored two runs in the first and added three in the
sixth for the victory.
Tsatsa (3-1) went the distance, scattering five hits, one
earned run, one walk and five strikeouts.
Stacks led off the game with a double and
Stephanie Gosselin hit a two run single up the middle to begin
the game. In the
fifth, MSUB used three RBI singles (Davis, Kelly Parsons,
Gosselin) to build a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored one run in the sixth on a
RBI single, but that would be it for the threat.
CWU had a hit in the seventh but were unable to muster
much of a rally.
The Yellowjackets will conclude the
tournament with a single game against Seattle University
tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PST.
