Red Hot Redhawks Down Yellowjackets in GNAC Opener, 120-81

BILLINGS, Mont. – A blistering shooting night by Seattle University lifted the Redhawks to a 120-81 victory over Montana State Billings Saturday night at Alterowitz Gymnasium. The Redhawks (8-2, 1-0 GNAC) shot 58.6 percent from the field for the game and 62.9 percent in the second half. The Yellowjackets (0-12, 0-1 GNAC) were led by 22 points from freshman Aaron Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif.)

The game opened as both teams went back-and-forth until the Redhawks went on a 14- 2 run opening a 22-11 lead with 11:12 to play. MSUB answered the run as freshman John Brooks (Perris, Calif.) hit his second trey of the game, making the score 22-14. Moments later, freshman Cameron Khoury (Alta Loma, Calif.) hit another 3-pointer cutting the deficit to 22-17 with 10:10 to play.

Seattle University came right back as Michael Knight hit three consecutive field goals including two 3-pointers pushing the Redhawk lead to 30-19 with 8:17 to play.  After a timeout by MSUB, Knight hit his fourth consecutive field goal giving him a then-team high 10 points midway through the half.

The Redhawks built the lead to 15 points with just over four minutes to play courtesy of a pair of 3-pointers from Ryan Coldren. Seattle closed the half on a 10-0 run over the final 4:30, building a 53-30 lead at intermission. MSUB did not score again in the half after a Khoury 3-pointer with 4:34 left.

For the half, the Yellowjackets were led by nine points from sophomore Jeff Miner (Gresham, Ore.) who was playing in his first game since Nov. 14. Miner sat out the last eight games due to a violation of team rules. He was 3 of 8 from the field, 1 of 4 from beyond the arc and 2 of 3 from the line. As a team, the Yellowjackets were 10 of 33 from the field (30.3%), 7 of 21 from beyond the arc and went to the line just five times, making three.

Leading the way for the Redhawks in the first half was Coldren with 14 points as he was 6 of 12 from the field and 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. Also in double figures was Knight with 10 points. As a team, the Redhawks were red hot, shooting 54.3 percent from the floor on 19 of 35. They were 4 of 9 from beyond the arc and 11 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Seattle University outrebounded MSUB 28-16, including 7-3 on the offensive end.

The second half opened as SU outscored MSUB 10-4 through the first 2:30 of the second half. The Redhawks scored 20 of the last 24 points dating back to the 4:30 mark of the first half.

Seattle continued to pour it on as it went on a 15-0 run since the 16:21 mark building an 80-38 lead with 12:54 left. MSUB freshman Brett Taylor (Billings, Mont.) ended the drought with a 3-pointer at the 12:20 mark cutting the deficit to 80-41.

For the game, MSUB was led by 22 points from Terry, including 21 in the second half. He was 6 of 17 from the field and 10 of 15 from the line. Also in double figures was Miner with 17 points, freshman Kirk Blaine (Gillette, Wyo.) with 12 and Brooks with 10.

The Yellowjackets shot better from the field in the second half (15 of 37) for 40.5 percent and were 25 of 70 for 35.7 for the game. They were 12 of 38 from beyond the arc and 19 of 29 from the line.

SU had six players in double figures led by a pair of 20 point performances by Knight and a career-high from Chris Gweth off the bench. The Redhawks shot 59 percent from the field (41 of 70) and 63 percent in the second half. Seattle had 73 points off the bench and outrebounded the Yellowjackets 55-32, including 42-22 on the defensive end.

MSUB will be back in action on Thurs., Jan. 10, against Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. in Alterowitz Gym. It will be the second game of a doubleheader as the women's game begins at 5 p.m. Live video streaming, free live stats, and free internet broadcast can be accessed online.
