Lewis-Clark State’s 11-Run Inning Dooms Yellowjackets

LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State used an 11-run inning to defeat Montana State Billings 18-5 in the second game of the Lewis-Clark State Tournament Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Yellowjackets fall to 1-1 on the year, while LCSC improves to 7-2.
The Warriors came out swinging the bats early on, scoring six runs in the first two innings on six hits off freshman pitcher Brian Howe. MSUB loaded the bases in the second inning with the help of two errors by LCSC, but were unable to get anything across.
Howe settled down in the third, retiring the Warriors in order and faced five batters in the fourth. He finished the game before the fifth inning began allowing seven hits, six earned runs, five walks and struck out one.
The Yellowjackets got on the board in the fifth inning with a lead-off single by junior Nick Rupert. Junior Jonathan Schlender reached on a throwing error, followed by a senior Seth Moir single up the middle, plating Rupert, for a 6-1 score.
The Warriors exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning on six hits. MSUB committed three errors and used four pitchers in the inning. Senior Hap Purden went just two-thirds of an inning allowing six hits and six earned runs. Junior Nick Harris did not record an out, allowing five runs – one earned and three walks.
MSUB continued to fight hard and plated four runs in the seventh inning before the game was called. LCSC tallied 18 runs on 14 hits and committed four errors.
For the game, MSUB had five runs on seven hits and committed four costly errors. Seven different Yellowjackets had hits in the game.
LCSC used two pitchers in the game as starter Matt Fitts (3-0) picked up the win scattering three hits, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts over five innings of work. Matt Stabelfeld struggled in his two innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
The Yellowjackets will look to redeem themselves tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Western Oregon in the third game of the Lewis-Clark State Tournament.
