BILLINGS, MT – In a physical
game between two of the Heartland Conference’s top women’s
soccer teams, not much was decided Friday afternoon. The game
between Montana State-Billings and St. Mary’s ended in a 1-1
tie. The Yellowjackets, who entered the game ranked fourth in
the NCAA Midwest Region, are now 11-3-1. The Rattlers, ranked
fifth in the Midwest Region, moved to 7-3-4.
The game was a physical battle
from the get-go and ended with 41 total fouls called, 23 against
MSUB and 18 against St. Mary’s. The Jackets’
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) finally broke a scoreless tie at 61:57
when she fired from the top of the 18-yard box to beat Rattlers
keeper Lily Cano.
Jelisa Guy (Kalispell, MT) assisted on the goal, which was
Stroup’s school-record fifteenth of the season. The assist was
Guy’s team-leading eighth of the year.
The Rattlers answered a little
less than 10 minutes later when Toni Tullius headed in a corner
kick from Marcey Morales. Tullius’s first goal of the season
forced overtime, where neither team really threatened. Neither
managed a shot in the first overtime period, and the Rattlers
had a 2-0 shots advantage in the second overtime.
The Jackets’
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) made three saves in the game,
including one in the second overtime. Cano stopped five
Yellowjacket shots. Stroup had three of the Jackets’ six shots
on goal. Erin McCutcheon had two shots on goal for the
Rattlers.
The Yellowjackets will have
Saturday off before hosting University of the Incarnate Word
(6-5-1) on Sunday. Kick off will be at 11:00 a.m. at the
MSU Billings College of Technology. |
