DENVER, CO – A late goal
lifted Regis University to a 1-0 upset of the Montana
State-Billings women’s soccer team on Sunday. The
Yellowjackets, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Midwest Region and No. 8
in the nation, lost for the second-straight time and the third
time in the last four games to fall to 11-3-0. Regis, which
snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday, improved to 9-5-2.
“We’re disappointed with the
loss, but we played much better today [than we did against Metro
State on Friday],” said Yellowjacket coach Don Trentham. “We
did a very good job defensively in a game where both teams had
opportunities to win. They just managed to finish one of their
chances. It was a good game.”
As anticipated, the game was a
defensive battle from the start. The teams combined to take
only six shots in the first half. MSU Billings finished the
game with an 11-8 total shots advantage, and both teams had six
shots on goal in the game.
The Rangers finally broke the
scoreless tie in the 82nd minute when twin sisters
Carter and Cassie Cornett hooked up on a corner kick. Carter
headed in Cassie’s corner kick for her team-leading tenth goal
of the season. The Rangers held on for the final eight minutes
to notch the upset.
The Jackets’
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) made five saves in the game.
Holly Redmond and Jessica Cefalo each made three saves in 45
minutes of action for the Rangers to share the shutout.
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) had six shots and two shots on goal for
the Yellowjackets. All three of
Brittney Sandau’s (Billings, MT)
shot attempts resulted in saves. Carter Cornett had three shots
on goal for the Rangers.
MSU Billings will host two
important games next weekend. The Jackets face St. Mary’s
University at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and University of the
Incarnate Word at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. St. Mary’s is currently
ranked sixth in the NCAA Midwest Region, and Incarnate Word is
the defending Heartland Conference Champion. The two games will
be part of YSA Youth Soccer Weekend Presented by Wendy’s. The
weekend will feature a free youth clinic for Yellowstone Soccer
Association players. |
