SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Montana
State-Billings women’s soccer team continues to be on fire as
the Lady Jackets chalked up their eighth win in a row Tuesday
winning 2-0 against the 2005 Heartland Conference Champions
University of the Incarnate Word. The Jackets are 8-0-0 overall
and 2-0 in conference play. The Cardinals drop to 3-3-1 on
their season.
The Lady Jackets make winning
look easy as they posted their seventh shutout of the season and
went 3-0 on the teams three-game swing through Texas. A coup of
Jackets were responsible for the win over the Cardinals.
Amy
Stephens (Colorado Springs, CO) scored what would become the
game winning goal on a pass from teammate
Brittney Sandau (Billings, MT) at the 12:54 mark of the
first half.
“We played very well in the
first half and just looked really good,” said Yellowjacket head
coach Don Trentham. “In the second, Incarnate Word came out and
controlled the first 15 minutes. We weathered the storm and
were able to get the second goal putting the game out of reach
for the Cardinals.”
The insurance goal came from
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) who broke the all-time school record on
Sunday for career goals scored. Freshman
Jelisa Guy (Kalispell, MT) assisted Stroup in the goal at
72:55 of the second.
“We played great against a
good team tonight and we just came out on top,” added Trentham.
“Not only in tonight’s game, but the entire trip was just a
great experience. Everyone contributed to the success in our
three wins on the road.”
The Yellowjackets dominated
the field putting 10 shots on goal to the Cards five. Jackets’
keeper
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) posted four saves bringing her
career total to 284 to go with 20 shutouts. Incarnate Word’s
keeper Amy Menegaz made eight saves in the game.
The Jackets’ defense held the
Cardinals at bay raising its consecutive shutout minutes to
499:00, blasting the previous record of 416:24 minutes. As a
team, the Jackets now hold the unbeaten streak record with eight
wins, surpassing the seven consecutive wins in 2004. More
impressively, the Lady Jackets have won six of six games on the
road, a feat that has never been accomplished until now.
The Yellowackets return home
