BILLINGS, MT – The Montana
State-Billings softball team needed a change of luck.
The wet spring weather the last couple weeks was on the
verge of completely spoiling their home schedule, but
that all changed on Friday. After having nine of their
last 10 games snowed out, the Yellowjackets took
advantage of a sunny Friday the 13th to sweep visiting
Incarnate Word in a Heartland Conference doubleheader.
The Jackets won the first game 5-0
behind
Lindsey Trenary's (Helena, MT) complete-game shutout
and completed the sweep with a 7-4 win in game two.
MSUB evened its overall record at 20-20 and improved to
8-5 in the conference. Preseason Heartland favorite
Incarnate Word dropped to 18-27, 6-10. The two will
meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at
1:00 p.m. at Cenex Stadium.
Ternary has emerged as the Jackets’
go-to starter in the past few weeks. The freshman from
Helena Capital High School kept the Cardinals off
balance in Friday’s early game, scattering four hits
over seven innings. She struck out six and walked two,
improving to 4-3 on the season. After starting the year
1-3, Trenary has posted three-straight victories.
Twice the Cardinals were able to
push a runner to third base, but Trenary worked out of
both jams. In the fifth she forced a groundout, and in
the sixth she wrung up a bases-loaded strikeout. In the
third, fourth, and seventh innings, Trenary sat the
Cardinals down in order.
The Jackets gave Trenary all the
support she needed when they broke a scoreless tie with
a pair of runs in the third.
Jenna McCartney (Hamilton, MT) hit a two-out single
to center field to score
Aysha Maddox (Richland, WA) and
Mandy Schaapveld (Puyallup, WA). McCartney was
2-for-3 in the game.
MSUB tacked on three insurance runs
with a power surge in the bottom of the fourth.
Jenna Haacke (Billing, MT) hit her fifteenth career
home run, a two-run shot with one out that scored
Terina Stacks (Washougal, WA). After a groundout,
Leslie Davis (Federal Way, WA) hammered a two-out
full count pitch for her fourth homer of the year.
Davis was 2-for-3.
The Cardinals’ Amanda Sparks (5-9)
took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs in four
innings. Monica Gutierrez gave up two hits without
allowing a run in relief. Four different UIW batters
had singles.
After spotting the Cardinals a 1-0
lead in the second game, the Yellowjacket offense scored
three runs in the first and third innings. After the
first two batters went down in the bottom of the first,
Stacks kept the inning alive with a single to center.
Steph Gosselin (Victoria, BC) followed Stacks with a
first-pitch home run, her second of the year. In the
next at bat, Davis blasted her second solo shot of the
day and fifth home run of the year.
In the MSUB half of the third,
starter
Rebekah Tsatsa (Eagle, ID) helped her own cause with
an RBI double to right that scored Gosselin from third.
Two batters later, senior
Megan Moeller (Ontario, OR) knocked a two-out single
to left center to score Davis and Tsatsa. The Jackets
added a run in the fourth when Maddox drew a bases
loaded walk to score Stacks.
Gosselin was 3-for-4 with two runs
and two RBIs. Davis went 3-for-3 to go 5-for-6 for the
day. Stacks, Tsatsa, and Moeller each had two hits.
Tsatsa gave up nine hits and three earned runs in the
win. She improved her season record to 8-8.
Judyann Gonzales took the loss for
UIW, allowing 12 hits in six innings. Stacy Segner was
2-for-2 and scored two runs. Patty Madera was 2-for-4
and drove in two RBI. Jenny Whitt was 1-for-3 with a
walk and two runs.
Saturday will be Senior Day for
MSU Billings. Yellowjacket seniors Maddox, Moeller,
McCartney, and
Lorel Palmer (Ogden, UT) will be honored following
the second game. |
