Lady Jackets Upset Bakersfield at Leadoff
(2/16/07)
Box Score
PHOENIX, AZ – The Montana
State-Billings softball team knocked off Cal
State-Bakersfield 2-1 in eight innings on Friday to
close out pool play at the Schutt Sports DII Leadoff
Classic.
Lisa
Moore (Bakersfield, CA) and
Mandy Schaapveld (Puyallup, WA) each scored in the
top of the eighth inning to give the Jackets their
second win of the season and snap a six-game losing
streak. CSU-Bakersfield dropped to 4-3.
Moore also went the distance in the
circle for her first victory of the season. She
scattered six hits over eight innings, striking out
three and walking four. Using the international
tiebreaker, Moore was placed on second base to start the
eighth inning after grounding out to end the seventh.
She was moved over to third on a sac bunt by
Steph Gosselin (Victoria, BC).
Schaapveld was hit-by-pitch on the
next at bat, giving the Jackets runners on the corners
with one out.
Megan Moeller (Ontario, OR) reached on an error to
score Moore from third and move Schaapveld from first to
third. Two batters later,
Lorel Palmer (Ogden, UT) slapped a single to
leftfield to drive in Schaapveld.
In Bakersfield’s half of the
eighth, the Roadrunners started with a runner on second
and their cleanup hitter at the plate. After a leadoff
double scored a run and cut the lead to 2-1, Moore
induced the Runners into two groundouts and a fly out to
end the game.
The Runners’ Shawna Truan held the
Yellowjackets to singles from
Terina Stacks (Washougal, WA), Palmer, and
Jessica Frank (Great Falls, MT). She struck out
seven and walked one, but Bakersfield was able to
produce just one run with its six hits.
The Yellowjackets will begin
bracket play Friday night. They
face Western Oregon at 7:00 p.m. If they win, they
will play the 9:00 p.m. game. If they lose, they
play Saturday. Bracket
play wraps up on Saturday.
