Jackets Finish Twelfth at Elco, Inc. Invite (3/27/07)
Final Results
BAKERSFIELD, CA- The Montana
State-Billings men’s golf team played the final 36-holes
at the Elco, Inc. Invitational hosted by Cal
State-Bakersfield Tuesday, where a three round combined
team total of 972 placed the Jackets twelfth in the
12-team field.
Several changes in team standings
took place between the top teams in the field with
first, second, and third separated by just three
strokes. Host team Cal State-Bakersfield shot a 290 and
302 in the final two rounds for a combined 877 which
catapulted them from third place after round one to take
the top spot overall. UCLA held steady carding rounds
of 284, 289, and 305 for an 878 and second place. Cal
State-San Bernardino fell from the leader’s spot after
round one to third place shooting a 282, 288, and 309
for an 879. Point Loma Nazarene stumbled in the final
round to slide from a tie for second place all the way
to fifth with rounds of 284, 291, and 313 for 888.
The Yellowjackets were perhaps the
most consistent team throughout all three rounds of
golf. The average variance in scores for the teams was
just over 18 strokes through 54-holes, whereas, the
Yellowjackets varied just three-strokes over the course
of the invitational.
Sam Cyr from Point Loma Nazarene
held on to win the individual competition with rounds of
68, 67, and 78 for a three-under par 213. There was a
tie for second place between Grant Doverspike of Fresno
State and Charlie Harris from UCLA. Doverspike’s
consistency moved him from seventh after round one into
the second position with rounds of 71, 72, and 71 for a
two-under 214. Most impressive was Brady Baguio of Cal
State-Bakersfield who launched from twenty-second after
18-holes to a three-way tie for fourth with rounds of
75, 70, and 72 for a one-over 217.
Zach
Abels (Twin Falls, ID) was the top finisher for the
Yellowjackets. Abels shot a 78, 82, and 76 for a
combined 20-over 236 tying him for twentieth place. Michael Konrad (Rupert, ID) and Tyler Nicolas (Sheridan, WY) tied for forty-ninth
with a two-day total 242. Jason
Kinsey (Glendive, MT) shot an 81, 83, and 88 for a
252 and fifty-eighth place.
