Mustangs Sweep Lady Jackets to Split Series (9/24/05)

BILLINGS, MT – Western New Mexico swept the
Montana State-Billings volleyball team Saturday night to earn a
two-match Heartland Conference split. The Mustangs’ Stephanie
Higgins dominated the match, pounding out 30 kills on a blistering
.500 attack percentage. Western won 32-30, 30-28, 30-27.
The Mustangs improved to 13-4 overall and 3-1
in the Heartland Conference. MSU Billings fell to 12-4, 2-2. The
Yellowjackets stopped Western’s 11-match winning streak with a 3-2
win on Friday night.
Higgins, a transfer from Ohio State, had a
big match Friday with 27 kills. She was nearly unstoppable
Saturday needing just 48 attack attempts to reach the 30-kill
mark. Last week’s Heartland Conference hitter of the week also
picked up seven digs.
The Mustangs hit .357 as a team with 61 kills
and just 16 errors. They didn’t have a game with a team attack
percentage below .318. Janiel McNeill was the only other Mustang
with double digit kills with 13. Denise Lunt came off the bench
to record 10 digs. Setter Courtney Heiser handed out a match-high
51 assists after recording 59 on Friday.
The Yellowjackets were led by 14 kills apiece
from Jessica Bratton (Jr., Casper, WY) and Alicia
Cazemier (So., Vauxhall, Alberta). Cazemier had just three
attack errors on 24 attempts for a .458 attack percentage. She
also posted four blocks for a total of 17 for the weekend.
Ali Watson (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) added a double-double of 11 kills and 14
digs. She also led all players with three service aces. Natalie
Bills (Jr., Provo, UT) handed out 47 assists and had two
service aces. Cazemier and Nicole
Kruse (So., Huntley, MT) also had a pair of aces each. Kruse
added eight digs. Alexis
Sandru (Jr., Twin Bridges, MT) finished with eight kills and
seven digs. Jessica
Lechner (Fr., Huntley, MT) had five kills on eight attempts.
MSU Billings will play a non-conference match
at Rocky Mountain College on September 27 before returning to
Heartland Conference play. After the match at Rocky, the Jackets
will make a four-match road trip with two matches each at Dallas
Baptist and Oklahoma Panhandle.
