DUNCAN, OK – Montana State-Billings
golfer Nick Larson sits in a tie for twentieth place
after the opening round of the NCAA South Central
Regional on Monday at the Territory Golf Club. Larson
shot an opening round 75 on the 7,077-yard, par-72
course.
"I felt I played
solid," said Larson. "I had a couple holes where I
missed the fairway. On those particular holes it's
tough to play from off fairway. Other than that I
thought I was solid. After the round I looked at
the standings and I was tied for 20th and seven strokes
back from the leader. My thought is, I have two
more days and I'm only seven back. I've put myself
in position to make a move in the second round. I
reflected on some putts that I missed because of bad
reads, and I hit a few shots on the range. I feel good
about going out (Tuesday) and shooting and good round."
Larson started the day with a bogey
on the par-4 first hole. The sophomore from Riverton,
Wyo., bounced back quickly with an eagle on the par-5
second. He finished the front nine with five pars, a
double-bogey, and a bogey for a 2-over 38.
After a par on the tenth hole,
Larson birdied No. 11 to get back to one-over. He
recorded pars on the next five holes before finally
bogeying 17 and 18.
Curtis Harris of Abilene Christian
and Mike Wog of Western New Mexico are tied with Larson
at 3-over after the first round. The overall lead after
the first 18 holes belongs to Mitch Boles of Central
Oklahoma and Brad Risenhoover of Northeastern State.
Both shot opening-round 68s.
The tournament continues on Tuesday
and Wednesday. The winner of each regional tournament
and the top individual not on the winning team within
the super regional will advance to the NCAA Division II
National Championships May 15-19, in Daniels, W.Va.
Three additional teams with the next lowest scores in
the combined Super Regional field will also receive
at-large berths to the national tournament. |
