Yellowjackets Blast Coyotes Twice in Five (Apr. 13, 2005)

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings
quickly dispatched visiting Albertson College on
Wednesday, winning via the eight run rule in both games of
the doubleheader. The Yellowjackets pounded out 27 hits
in just eight offensive innings, winning 12-0 and 15-4 in
five innings both times.
MSU Billings improved to 28-12
overall, dropping Albertson to 15-22. The Yellowjackets
next play on April 25 when they host a non-conference
doubleheader against Minot State. MSUB resumes PacWest
play on April 30 against Western New Mexico at Cenex
Stadium. The Mustangs will be in town for Saturday and
Sunday doubleheaders that will likely determine whether
the Yellowjackets qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
The Jackets used a nine run third
inning to run away from the Coyotes in the first game. Joey
Ehnes (Sr., Great Falls, MT) pitched three no-hit
innings for the win. She struck out five of the nine
batters she faced, moving her career strikeout total over
600. Ehnes also tied her own school record for single
season victories at 21.
Cami
Rainey (Sr., Terreton, ID) was 2-for-3 at the plate
with a pair of doubles. She drove in two and scored
once. Ehnes was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Rachel Quarnburg (So., Billings, MT) went 2-for-2 and
scored three times. Jenna Haacke (Fr., Billings, MT) went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI.
Theresa Campbell (Sr., Great Falls, MT) was 3-for-3
with three RBI and a home run. Her line drive shot into
the hill beyond the leftfield fence was her ninth homer of
the season, giving her the PacWest Conference lead and
setting a school single season record.
Albertson’s Ashley Bowman took the
loss after giving up 11 hits and 10 runs in 2 2/3
innings. Heather Kirtley was 1-for-2 for the Coyotes’
only hit of the game. Megan McCrae (Sr., Bradon, Manitoba) finished the
final two innings on the mound for the Jackets, giving up
one hit and walking one.
After the Yellowjackets jumped to a
4-0 lead in the first inning of game two, the ‘Yotes got
to the starter McCrae for four runs in the top of the
second. She allowed three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Two of
the hits were pop singles in the infield.
Ehnes replaced McCrae and pitched 2
2/3 innings. She struck out five without allowing a hit
to earn her school-record 22nd victory. Jordan Waverek (Sr., Kalispell, MT) closed the final
inning.
The Yellowjackets took a 7-4 lead in
the second inning on a three-run Campbell home run, her
second of the day and tenth of the season. After two
swing-and-miss changeups set her back in the count,
Campbell again deposited the ball onto the hill beyond the
leftfield fence. The Jackets blew the game open in the
bottom of the fourth with eight runs.
Rainey was 3-for-4 and homered twice
in the game for her fifth and six home runs of the
season. She drove in four RBI and scored twice. Sara
Hanley (Sr., Kalispell, MT) went 2-for-3 with a run.
Ehnes was 2-for-2 with two runs and a home run, her sixth
of the year. Campbell was 2-for-2 with three RBI and
three runs. Layne
Pavey (Sr., Spokane, WA) went 3-for-3 with four RBI
and a run.
The Coyotes’ Katie Theisen was
2-for-3 with a run scored. Lindzi Wasko took the loss
after giving up four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Tiana
Siddoway pitched the final 2 2/3 and was hammered for 10
hits and 11 runs. |
