Larson Slips to 30th in Final Regional Round
DAKOTA DUNES, SD – It was an up and
down tournament for the Yellowjackets’ first ever regional
golf qualifier. Nicholas Larson shot an 8-over par 80 in
Wednesday’s final round of the NCAA West Regional to
finish in 30th place with a three day total of
22-over 238.
"For a freshman
playing in his first regional, Nick impressed a lot of
people this week," said Yellowjacket head coach Roger
Burckley. "It was a good experience for him and he
learned a lot. He struggled with his putting, but it
was a very tough course. Only two players finished
under par for both regions."
After struggling to an 84 on Monday,
Larson managed the tough 7,165-yard course for a 2-over 74
in Tuesday’s second round to move within striking distance
of the top 20. But seven bogeys and a double bogey on
Wednesday dropped him back in the pack.
Starting on the back nine again
Wednesday, Larson doubled No. 10 to start the day. He
followed with a bogey and his only birdie of the day on
the next two holes. Things were looking good after
back-to-back pars following the birdie, but he bogeyed No.
15 and No. 18 before making the turn at 4-over. Five pars
and four bogeys on his second nine left him at 8-over for
the day.
Western Washington’s Tim Feenstra won
top individual honors with a 2-under 214 over the three
rounds, leading the Vikings to the team title. He shot a
67 on Tuesday, the second lowest round of the tourney.
Hawaii-Hilo’s Nick Mason was close behind with a 1-under
