Yellowjacket Cross-Country Teams Return to
Colorado for UNC Invitational (Oct. 9, 2003)
BILLINGS, MT – A week after
competing at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder,
the MSU Billings cross-country teams will go back to
Colorado for the Northern Colorado Invitational on
Saturday. The meet will mark the fifth race in as
many weeks for the Yellowjackets, who will be idle
next week before hosting the Yellowjacket
Invitational on October 25.
“We’re a little tired after all
of the traveling and racing over the past five weeks
without a break,” said head coach Dave Coppock. “We usually have a good
performance at this meet, so I think we can handle
one more week until we have a week off from
competition.”
The Yellowjacket women finished
sixth against some of the top Division II teams in
the country last week. Chelsea Lynnes (Jr., Miles City, MT) continued
to lead the Lady Jackets, finishing 34th with a time of 23:42 for the 5.8K course. Anjel Hoff (Sr., Billings, MT), Tiffany Piplica (Fr., Riverton, WY) and Tracie Overberg (So., Dodson, MT) all finished
in under 26 minutes.
The Yellowjacket men were led
by Scott Brown’s (So., Billings, MT) 8K time of
29:42. Sam Hartpence (So, Custer, SD) finished in
30:43. Joe Kragt (Fr., Billings, MT), the
Yellowjackets’ top runner for most of the season did
not finish the race due to respiratory
difficulties. He is expected to return this week
for the UNC meet.
“Chelsea continues to run
well,” said Coppock, “and could finish in the top
ten again. On the men’s side, Joe and Sam have been
battling colds and upper respiratory illnesses, but
we’re hopeful they’ll be feeling better by the
weekend. This will be a smaller meet than last week
on a much flatter, faster course. Our objective is
to drop our race times and start getting tuned up
for the latter part of the season.”
The Yellowjackets will host
their annual “Riverfront Ramble” fun run sponsored
by ExxonMobile on October 25 preceding the
Yellowjacket Invitational. Those interested in
running can call 657-2369 for information. MSUB
will then travel to Pomona, CA for the NCAA West
Regional on November 8.
