Lady Yellowjackets Fall in Overtime to Northern Colorado (Oct. 26, 2003)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – A goal in the fifth minute of
overtime was the downfall of the MSU Billings women’s soccer team
Sunday as the Yellowjackets lost to Northern Colorado, 1-0.
Shannon Fox headed in Chelsey Ekenberg’s corner kick at 95:56 to
win the game for the Bears (6-6-1), who are in their first year at
Division I. The Yellowjackets dropped their third straight game
to fall to 6-9-1.
“The last two games we’ve allowed goals on
corner kicks,” said Yellowjacket coach Don
Trentham, “and we haven’t connected on our own corner kicks.
Corner kicks and restarts win games. We’ve won some games this
year on them, but today we just dropped the ball on the last one.”
Playing into a stiff northwest wind, the
Yellowjackets withstood ten UNC shots in the first half to go into
the break tied at 0-0. The Bears out-shot the Jackets 10-0 in the
opening half and 22-9 in the game. With the wind in their favor
in the second half, the Yellowjackets were able to mount an
offensive and outshoot the Bears 9-6, but UNC goalkeeper Shanna
Swinehart made three saves in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Ally
Taylor (Ojai, CA) had a breakaway with less than ten minutes
remaining in regulation for the Yellowjackets’ best scoring
opportunity of the game, but she missed just outside of the left
post and the game went to the extra period.
After switching directions for the overtime,
the Bears dominated play, firing six shots against Yellowjacket
goalkeeper Alyssa Wolfer (Fr., Longmont, CO). Wolfer made three of her
eight saves in the overtime period, but didn’t have a chance to
stop the game winner. The header from Fox came from the backside
and caromed off the bottom of the crossbar and just across the
plane of the goal.
“It was nice to see Alyssa play well today,”
said Trentham. “She hadn’t played for a while and we wanted to
get her some time. It’s a credit to her that she came in and
played well. She kept that game close.”
Last season the Yellowjackets lost to the
Bears 3-0 in Greeley. Despite playing much closer this year,
MSU Billings is now 0-9 against Northern Colorado. The
Yellowjackets will try to stop their three-game losing streak on
Wednesday when they host cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College.
MSUB beat RMC 3-0 at Rocky on September 20 to end another
three-game losing streak.
“I hope our team isn’t satisfied with another
moral victory just because we played better against them than we
did last year,” said Trentham of the loss to UNC. “We’ve played
well in losses this year and sometime we need to step up and win.
We are pleased that we executed a game plan today and we did play
well, but it’s still a loss. I hope it will motivate us for
Wednesday when we play Rocky, who will be gunning for us.”
