Lady Yellowjackets Fall to Utah Valley State (Oct. 24, 2003)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – A goal in each half Friday
lifted Utah Valley State to a 2-0 win over MSU Billings in women’s
soccer action. Taylor Cracroft scored the game-winner for the
Wolverines at 17:20, recovering a ball that was loose in the box
off a corner kick and high-kicking it into the goal. UVSC
improved to 7-4-1 while MSUB dropped to 6-8-1. Utah Valley will
face Northern Colorado Saturday at 1:00 in a meeting of two teams
new to the DI ranks. The Yellowjackets will take on UNC on Sunday
at 1:00.
“We gave up what I thought was a pretty soft
goal in the first half,” said Yellowjacket coach Don
Trentham. “We work hard on corner kicks all year, but then we
get scored on off a corner that eventually won the game.”
The Yellowjackets appeared to score the tying
goal in the 58th minute when Stephanie Clark (Jr., Tualatin, OR) drilled a free kick into
the left corner of the goal from about 20 yards out. The goal was
waved off, however, because a Utah Valley State player had
encroached prior to the kick and the official had blown his
whistle just before Clark kicked the ball.
“To have what looks like the tying goal
called off is definitely frustrating,” said Trentham. “We worked
hard to keep the score 1-0 to give ourselves a chance to tie the
game off a corner kick or a restart. It looked like it paid off,
but it was a bad break.”
The Wolverines put the game out of reach in
the 82nd minute on a Tennille Vance goal. Karrie
Broderick sent a long pass through the midfield to Vance, who then
beat goalkeeper Megan
Plank (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) who had come out of the net to make a
play on the ball. Plank made seven saves.
“I didn’t think we played well in the first
half,” said Trentham. “We didn’t execute our game plan and that’s
been a problem the past few weeks. We made some adjustments in
the second half and actually played better going into the wind
than we did playing with it in the first half. Ally
Taylor (Fr., Ojai, CA) and Sara
Otis (Sr., Vancouver, WA) worked well together and Margot
Merrill-Johnson (Jr., Salt Lake City) did a good job bringing
the ball out. We’ll just need to find a way to win on Sunday.”
