Clifford Paces Lady Jackets in First Round at
Phoenix (Mar. 29, 2004)
GOODYEAR, AZ – Julie Clifford’s
11-over 83 led the Montana State-Billings women’s
golf team in the first round of the Grand Canyon
Invitational on Monday at the Palm Valley Golf
Club. The Yellowjackets sit in 18th place out of 18 teams, five strokes behind host
Grand Canyon and nine strokes behind College of the
Southwest.
“Julie played really well
today,” said Yellowjacket golf coach Roger Burckley.
“I’m really proud of the way she played, and we’re
improving as a team. We had a couple players who
had tough days, but I think we can make a move to
catch a couple teams tomorrow. The temperature was
in the 90s, and I think that affected us some. This
is a good tournament for us. A lot of the top teams
in the region are here, so it gives us an idea of
where we need to be.”
Clifford is tied with a dozen
other players in 46th place. Elizabeth
Marshall sits in a tie for 67th after a
16-over 88. Northeast Oklahoma State’s Allison
Toomer leads the field with an even par 72, and
Northeastern Oklahoma also leads the team standings
with a 21-over 309. The final round at the
5,970-yard par-72 course will be held Tuesday.
