Lady Jackets Win Second-Straight Over Humboldt State (Jan. 2, 2004)

ARCATA, CA – Tanya Petersen had
her way with Humboldt State for the second game in a
row, scoring 17 points Friday afternoon to lead the
Lady Yellowjackets to a 68-58 victory over the
Lumberjacks. MSU Billings won for the fourth time
in its last five games, including an 80-64 win over
Humboldt State on Tuesday at the UC-San Diego
Invitational. Petersen notched a double-double of
19 points and 13 rebounds in that game.
The Yellowjackets never trailed
in the game, opening the first half with a 7-3 run.
Jenny Auer’s 3-pointer 4:22 into the game gave
MSU Billings a 7-3 lead. Auer finished with 11
points and two 3-pointers while handing out a
team-high four assists.
The Lumberjacks were able to
tie the game twice early in the first half, scoring
at the 14:52 mark to make the score 7-7, and at
13:52 to tie the game at 9-9. The Yellowjackets
outscored Humboldt 13-5 over the next seven minutes
to build an eight point lead. Auer and Robyn Milne
each scored in the final minute of the half to give
the Jackets a 31-21 lead at the break.
Humboldt was able to cut the
lead to six on five different occasions in the
second half, but couldn’t get any closer. A Milne
layup followed by four straight points from Alisa
Lordemann gave the Yellowjackets their largest lead
of the game, 66-52, with 2:16 remaining in the
game. Milne finished with her eighth double-double
of the season, scoring 16 points to go with a
game-high ten rebounds. For the season she is
averaging a double-double of 13.2 points and 12.3
rebounds a game. Lordemann scored nine points in
the game.
The Yellowjackets improved to
7-6 with the win. Humboldt lost for the
seventh-straight time, falling to 3-8. Nicole Lynch
led the Lumberjacks with a game-high 20 points.
Peni Vaefaga added 15 points and nine rebounds. Six
of her points came on 3-pointers in the final 1:21
of the game.
MSU Billings will next play at
Western New Mexico on January 9 and 10. The two
games against the Mustangs in Silver City will end a
ten-game road stretch for the Lady Jackets. They
enter the WNMU series with a 6-4 record against West
Region teams. The Yellowjackets return to
Alterowitz on January 16 and 17 when they host Green
Mountain College. |
