Petersen Leads Lady Jackets over Humboldt State (Dec. 30, 2003)

LA JOLLA, CA – Tanya Petersen’s
double-double lifted MSU Billings to an 80-64 West
Region win over Humboldt State Tuesday night at the
UC-San Diego Invitational. The sophomore forward
scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting and
pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.
Just one night after posting a
field goal percentage in the low 30s, the Lady
Yellowjackets were on the mark from the opening
tip. MSUB shot 56-percent from the field in the
first 20 minutes to build a 47-33 halftime lead and
finished the game with a 55.6-percent field goal
percentage.
Robyn Milne was almost perfect
from the field, connecting on 6-of-7. She hit all
four of her free throw attempts to finish with 16
points. Milne also handed out four assists and
blocked two shots.
Sophia Forney added 13 points
and was 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the
charity stripe. MSUB’s big three of Petersen, Milne
and Forney accounted for 48 of the Jackets’ 80
points and were a combined 18-of-28 from the field.
The Lumberjacks’ top two
scorers entering the game, Nicole Lynch and Peni
Vaefaga, each netted 17 points, but were the only
two in double figures for Humboldt. The
Yellowjackets held the Lumberjacks to 39-percent
shooting from the field and out rebounded them by
ten on the defensive glass.
Jenny Auer chipped in nine
points for the Yellowjackets, making two of the
team’s six 3-pointers. Lisa Jellum added seven
points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Jenny Langford and
Jennifer Skrifvars each finished with six points.
Skrifvars also had a career-high eight rebounds.
The Yellowjackets and
Lumberjacks will meet again on January 2 on
Humboldt’s home court in Arcata, CA. MSU Billings
improved to 6-6 with Tuesday’s win; Humboldt State
dropped to 3-7.
