Career Highs Lift Lady Jackets to Season Opening
Win (Nov. 17, 2003)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – Four different
players scored career highs Monday night as the
MSU Billings women’s basketball team outran Sonoma
State 82-72. Robyn Milne (Jr., Richey, MT) led all
players with 20 points, followed by Jenny Langford
(So., Reedpoint, MT) with 17, Tanya Peterson (So.,
Billings, MT) with 14, and Kayla Frize (Jr.,
Billings, MT) with 14. All four outings were career
highs for points with Milne also adding a career
high 16 rebounds.
The Yellowjackets were shut
down by the Seawolves last season in a 63-44 loss in
Rohnert Park. That game was the Jackets’ worst
offensive performance of the season. Under new
coach Melissa Slone, MSUB unleashed full court
pressure for 40 minutes to score more points than
they did in all but one game last season. The only
time the Lady Jackets broke 80 points last year was
in their 91-69 tournament win over Central
Washington.
After nine lead changes in the
first half en route to a 36-33 halftime advantage
for the Yellowjackets, MSUB extended its lead to
48-41 at the 16:38 mark of the second half on a
Langford 3-pointer. A basket from Peterson at 14:33
gave the Yellowjackets a nine-point lead and they
didn’t let that lead fall below five until back to
back free throws by the Seawolves’ Stephanie Scott
at 8:27, cutting the lead to 61-58. That was as
close as Sonoma would get for the rest of the game
as the Yellowjackets hit enough free throws down the
stretch to seal the win.
MSU Billings lost the turnover
battle 22-11 and shot just 66-percent from the free
throw line, but the Yellowjackets outscored the
Seawolves 24-6 from 3-point range, including 4-of-5
from behind the arc in the second half. Langford
made a career high five 3-pointers on six attempts
in the game. Frize, Peterson and Jenny Auer (So.,
Billings, MT) each hit one 3-pointer. Frize also
handed out a career high five assists.
The same teams will play again
Tuesday night at Alterowitz. Tip off is scheduled
for 7:00 p.m. Both games between the Yellowjackets
and Seawolves are important West Region contests for
establishing winning regional records before the
first polls in January.
