2003)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings volleyball team
battled to reach match-point against Western New Mexico Friday, but
eventually lost in five games, 27-30, 30-26, 27-30, 30-24, 16-14. The
Yellowjackets finish the season at 6-10 overall and 2-8 in the PacWest
while Western New Mexico won its final ten matches to finish at 18-13
overall and 4-6 in the PacWest.
Olivia Munro (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) pounded out a
career-high 33 kills on a workhorse-like 102 total attempts. The 33 kills
were just five short of the PacWest Conference single-match record and
tied for the fourth-highest total in conference history. Munro also
picked up 19 digs.
“We showed up to play tonight,” said Yellowjacket
coach Pa’ulasi Matavao. “It was a totally different match than last
night. It came down to who was going to make the most plays at the end
and they made some nice saves. We were right there to win it and put
ourselves in position. We had one nice swing to win the match. Overall
we played better than last night as far as intensity, and our seniors
played well. They wanted to go out on a win, and these 3-2 losses are
harder to take than the 3-0 ones.”
Cortney Metzler (Jr., Roundup, MT) and Jessica
Bratton (Fr., Casper, WY) each finished with 13 kills as the only other
Yellowjackets to reach double-digit kills in the match. Kari Jones (Jr.,
Hermiston, OR) handed out a career-high 62 assists and also added 16 digs
and four service aces. Alberta Letoa (Fr., Laie, HI) had 19 digs and
Alexis Sandru added 12 as the Yellowjackets reached 100 digs for the
second time this season.
Seniors Katrina Dahlgren (Missoula, MT), Sandy Beal
(Troy, MT) and Brittany Uffelman (Thermopolis, WY) all played the final
matches of their careers for MSU Billings. Dahlgren had five kills and
five total blocks, finishing as the school’s second all-time leading
blocker. She is currently first in the PacWest with 1.15 blocks per
game. Beal had six kills and five total blocks while Uffelman picked up a
match-high and career-high 20 digs. Beal is ranked tenth in the
conference for blocks at 0.73 per game.
The Mustangs were led by Kim Tano’s 25 kills on 72
attempts. Liz Narkon added 14 kills and 18 digs. Setter Malia Kauhi
finished with 52 assists and 11 digs.
