Lady
Jackets Fall to Hawaii-Hilo in Non-Conference Match (Nov. 4, 2003)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – A night after battling to a five-game
win, the MSU Billings volleyball team ran out of gas Tuesday night in a
3-1 loss to Hawaii-Hilo (30-20, 25-30, 30-26, 30-23). With two matches
left in the season, the Yellowjackets fall to 6-18 overall. Hawaii-Hilo
improved to 7-15 with the win, which counted as a non-conference match.
“I don’t think we showed up at all tonight,” said
Yellowjacket coach Pa’ulasi
Matavao. “We looked really slow and missed a lot of digs. Whoever
could get going first was going to win. Even if we were tired, we
shouldn’t be more tired than they were because they’re the ones on the
road.”
Five Vulcans reached double-digit kills, led by Emily
Hutchinson’s 17. Tiffanie Ollison added 15 kills, Cori Sutter added 13,
and Sara Pilgreen and Christina Cooley each had 10. Pilgreen, Ollison and
Silva Kahealani all picked up at least 20 digs as UH-Hilo held the Jackets
to a .098 team hitting percentage.
“Their kids did a good job of keeping the ball in
play tonight and letting us be the ones making the mistakes,” said
Matavao. “Offensively, we couldn’t get anything going and we were
predictable. We went to the outside too much, and our offense needs the
middle to work.”
Cortney Metzler (Jr., Roundup, MT) led MSU Billings with 15 kills on 36 attempts for a
.333 hitting percentage. Olivia Munro (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) added 14 kills, but also had 16 errors for a -.029
hitting percentage. Libero Alberta Letoa (Fr., Laie, HI) led the Yellowjackets with 20 digs while Katrina
Dahlgren (Sr., Missoula, MT) had four total blocks.
The Yellowjackets will close the season on November
13 and 14 when they host Western New Mexico. The Mustangs swept Chaminade
on Monday and Tuesday to extend their winning streak to eight matches.
