Yellowjacket Softball Falls Twice at
Hawaii-Hilo (Feb. 12, 2004)

HILO, HI – Montana State-Billings dropped
both games of a double-header to Hawaii-Hilo for the second
straight day Thursday, losing 4-3 and 3-0. The losses drop the
Yellowjackets to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the PacWest. The Vulcans
improved to 6-3, 4-0. MSU Billings travels to Honolulu for
conference double-headers on Saturday and Sunday at Chaminade.
After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the
Yellowjackets rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth
inning to tie the game. All three runs came from the bottom half
of the order, with the 6, 7 and 9 batters all scoring. Christy
Wankel started the inning with a single to right field. Anna
Henderson followed with an infield single, advancing Wankel to
second. Following an Aysha Blatter strikeout, Cami Rainey doubled
to left, plating Wankel and moving Henderson to third. A single
from Joey Ehnes scored both Henderson and Rainey to tie the game.
Stephanie Cochrun hit into a 4-3 double play to end the inning.
Jordan Waverek pitched the first 4 1/3
innings, allowing three runs on six hits. None of the runs were
earned as the Jackets committed three errors in the game. Ehnes
entered in relief of Waverek in the fifth inning, holding the
Vulcans scoreless for the next three innings and sending the game
into extra innings.
UH-Hilo finally manufactured the winning run
in the bottom of the ninth. After loading the bases on a
fielder’s choice and two singles, the Vulcans’ Laura Kimborowicz
singled to shortstop to score Zoie Sevilla for the game winner.
Ehnes was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
Kimborowicz was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Vulcans. Ehnes took
the loss despite allowing one run on five hits with four
strikeouts. Sarah Steele pitched nine innings for the victory.
The Yellowjackets were held to just three
hits in game two by the Vulcans’ Tara Martinez. Anna Henderson
was 2-for-3 for the Jackets. Ehnes went the distance on the
mound, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking
out five. UH-Hilo scored once in the first and twice in the
fourth behind balanced team hitting. The Vulcans’ eight hits came
from eight different batters. Ehnes fell to 3-3 on the year with
Thursday’s losses.
