Yellowjackets Drop Conference Openers at Hawaii-Hilo (Feb. 11, 2004)

HILO, HI – Montana State-Billings lost both
ends of a double-header Wednesday afternoon, falling 9-3 and 2-0
at Hawaii-Hilo in the PacWest Conference openers for both teams.
The Yellowjackets dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest
while the Vulcans improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.
The Yellowjackets jumped to a 3-0 lead in the
first game, scoring one in the first and two in the second.
Theresa Campbell’s two-out single plated Joey Ehnes in the top of
the first after Ehnes had doubled down the right field line.
MSUB extended its lead in the top half of the
second, scoring a pair of runs on two hits. Aysha Blatter’s
double moved Anna Henderson to third base after she had reached on
a fielder’s choice. Cami Rainey singled to left to score Blatter
and give the Jackets a two run lead. Ehnes reached on a fielder’s
choice on the next play, bringing home Blatter for the
Yellowjackets’ third and final run of the game.
The Vulcans got on the board in the bottom of
the second when B.J. Shimamota singled to score Jeani Jadlot from
third. Jadlot had advanced to third on a passed ball. The
Vulcans blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the
fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth. Nancy Vega was
2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Jackets’ Megan McCrae took the loss,
giving up 11 hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. Five
of the runs were earned as McCrae’s season record dropped to 1-3.
Joey Ehnes pitched the final 1 2/3, allowing four hits and two
unearned runs. Rainey led the Yellowjacket offense, going 2-for-3
at the plate with an RBI.
Ehnes started game two by allowing two runs
in the bottom of the first. She gave up a pair of singles and a
double that plated Lisa Jackson for the Vulcan’s first run of the
game. She then threw a wild pitch that allowed Laura Kimborowicz
to score from third.
That was enough for the Vulcans’ Tara
Martinez, who threw a three-hit shutout for the win. Singles from
Rainey, Sara Hanley and Stephanie Cochrun were the only hits
Martinez allowed. Ehnes pitched the entire game, giving up four
hits and two runs in six innings. She suffered her first defeat
of the season to fall to 3-1.
The Yellowjackets face the Vulcans again on
Thursday in another double-header. They then travel to Honolulu
for PacWest double-headers against Chaminade on Saturday and
Sunday.
