Yellowjackets End Spring Break Trip with Losses at Western New

SILVER CITY, NM – The Montana State-Billings
softball team finished a 10-day, 17-game spring break road swing
by dropping a doubleheader to defending PacWest champion Western
New Mexico on Saturday. The Yellowjackets lost 7-2 and 10-9 in 10
innings to fall to 9-22 overall and 0-12 in the PacWest. Western
New Mexico improved to 16-6 overall and remained unbeaten in
conference play at 4-0.
The Yellowjackets will play their home opener
on March 19 at the fourth annual Yellowjacket Invitational.
Sixteen of the Jackets’ final 22 games will be at Cenex Stadium in
Billings, including PacWest Conference games against Hawaii
Pacific and BYU-Hawaii in April.
The Mustangs took a 7-0 lead through four
innings of game one and cruised to the win. Angela Slaugh pitched
the complete game for the victory. The Jackets’ Joey Ehnes tossed
four innings in the loss, giving up five hits and seven runs while
striking out five. She dropped to 7-12 for the season. Stephanie
Cochrun pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and
striking out two.
Ehnes was 1-for-3 at the plate with a
double. Freshman Anna Henderson went 2-for-4, Christy Wankel was
2-for-3, and Cami Rainey was 1-for-4. Rainey had a two-RBI single
in the fifth inning.
The Yellowjackets took early control of game
two, scoring in each of the first three innings to build an 8-0
lead. The Mustangs rallied with six runs in the bottom of the
third to cut the lead to two. After MSUB added a run in the
sixth, the Mustangs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth
and two more in the seventh to force extra innings. The
Yellowjackets were just one out away from a 9-7 win before giving
up two runs with two down in the seventh.
Rainey was 2-for-5 in the game with a 3-run
home run. She also scored two runs. Ehnes, Sara Hanley and
Theresa Campbell were each 2-for-5. Megan McCrae was 2-for-4 with
two runs scored. Wankel was 3-for-3 and reached base four times,
scoring twice.
McCrae pitched the first seven innings,
allowing 11 hits and nine runs. Ehnes pitched the final 2 1/3
innings, giving up one hit and one run while striking out three.
Using international tiebreaking rules, the Mustangs’ Meredith
Drahota started the tenth inning on second base. After stealing
third, she scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Garcia. Slaugh
recorded the win after relieving Megan Gross in the third inning.
