NAMPA, ID – Montana State-Billings pounded
out 17 hits and scored 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep of
Northwest Nazarene on Monday. The Yellowjackets won the first
game 13-0 and the second 8-2 to improve to 8-17. The Crusaders
fell to 1-11. MSU Billings plays at Mesa State on Wednesday and
at Western New Mexico on Friday and Saturday in two PacWest
doubleheaders.
Joey Ehnes pitched five shutout innings of
the first game for her fifth win of the season. She struck out 13
of the 18 batters she faced and allowed just two hits. Stephanie
Cochrun pitched the final inning, retiring the side in order.
The Jackets didn’t get on the scoreboard
until the top of the third inning when Anna Henderson’s single to
centerfield drove in Ehnes after Ehnes had hit one of her two
doubles of the game. MSU Billings blew the game open with six
runs in the fourth and six more in the sixth, winning by the
eight-run rule after six innings.
Ehnes was 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs
scored. Henderson drove in two RBI and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Cochrun and Cami Rainey each drove in a pair and scored twice.
Cochrun was 3-for-4, and Rainey went 2-for-3.
Cochrun went the distance in the second game
for her first victory of the season. She allowed six hits and two
earned runs while striking out seven in seven innings. The
Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a pair of
singles and a sac bunt. The Yellowjackets answered with three
runs in the third and three more in the fifth to give Cochrun all
the breathing room she needed.
Layne Pavey and Christy Wankel each drove in
two RBI. Pavey was 2-for-4 and also scored a run. Wankel was
1-for-4 with a triple. Cochrun helped her own cause, going
1-for-3 and scoring two runs. Sara Hanley was 1-for-3 with an RBI
and two runs scored. She also stole two bases. |
