Yellowjackets Give Up Leads, Drop Pair to Humboldt State (Mar. 4, 2004)

RICHLAND, WA – Montana State-Billings held
leads in both games of a doubleheader against 15th-ranked
Humboldt State on Thursday, but lost both games. The
Yellowjackets dropped game one, 6-4 in nine innings, and game two
6-2. MSUB dropped to 4-12 overall with the losses. HSU improved
to 11-6.
Christy Wankel’s three-run homer in the
bottom of the second inning of game one gave the Yellowjackets a
3-0 lead that they extended to 4-0 in the fourth inning when
Stephanie Cochrun drove in Wankel. Joey Ehnes pitched six
scoreless innings, but gave up four runs in the top of the
seventh, including a three-run home run to pinch hitter Victoria
Barbaria.
The Lumberjacks plated two runs in the top of
the ninth for the win. Ehnes pitched nine innings, allowing
eleven hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.
Hannah Hanes got the win for the Lumberjacks after pitching the
final five innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.
In game two, the Jackets struck first with
two runs in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Joey Ehnes
singled and later scored on an RBI sacrifice by Sara Hanley.
Theresa Campbell followed with an RBI single to drive home
Stephanie Cochrun. The singles from Ehnes and Campbell were the
only hits of the game for the Yellowjackets.
The Lumberjacks took the lead with three runs
in the bottom of the first and added a run in the fifth and two
more in the sixth. Yellowjacket starter Megan McCrae gave up
seven hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work to take
the loss. She gave up home runs to HSU’s Jessica Pedilla and
Andrea Williams. Jordan Waverek pitched 2/3 of an inning in
relief, allowing no hits and two walks.
The Yellowjackets and Lumberjacks will meet
again Friday morning in the opening game of the Central Washington
Invitational that runs through Sunday. The Yellowjackets will
play at least seven games at the tournament, with potentially more
games if they advance to the bracket play. They will face No.
1-ranked North Dakota State on Saturday. |
