Yellowjacket Softball Splits at First Day of Las Vegas Classic (Feb. 5, 2004)
LAS VEGAS, NV – Montana State-Billings opened
the 2004 softball season by splitting two games at the Las Vegas
Classic on Thursday. The Yellowjackets dropped the first game of
the tournament to Cal Baptist, 5-0, and won their afternoon match
up against Longwood, 2-1.
The Jackets’ Megan McCrae gave up five hits
and five runs in five innings of work to take the loss to Cal
Baptist. The Yellowjacket defense committed four errors in the
game. Sara Hanley and Christy Wankel each singled for MSUB’s two
hits in the game. Cal Baptist scored two runs in the bottom of
the first and added three insurance runs in the bottom of the
fifth for winning pitcher Amanda Xavier.
Joey Ehnes pitched the Yellowjackets to their
first win of the season in the afternoon game against Longwood, a
provisional Division I team. She struck out four and allowed just
one unearned run while scattering four hits over seven innings.
Ehnes scored the first run of the game in the
top of the first after drawing a walk. Anna Henderson moved her
to third with a single, and Sara Hanley followed with a full-count
RBI single. Longwood tied the game in the bottom of the third
with its unearned run. Freshman Aysha Blatter scored the winning
run in the top of the sixth off an RBI single from Ehnes. Blatter
started the inning with a walk and was moved to second base on a
sac bunt by Cami Rainey.
Henderson was 3-for-4 with a double in just
her second collegiate game. Hanley went 2-for-3 with a walk, and
Rainey was 1-for-1 with two sacrifices and a double.
The Yellowjackets face 12th-ranked
Barry Friday morning and Vanguard in the afternoon. |
