Yellowjacket Softball Team Opens
Fall Schedule with Blue-White Scrimmage Saturday (Sept. 25, 2003)
BILLINGS, MT
– Coming off a breakthrough season in 2003, the MSU Billings
softball team will begin its fall campaign this Saturday with its
annual Blue-White scrimmage at Cenex Stadium. The game is set to
start at 3:00 p.m.
The
Yellowjackets finished 15-20 overall in just their third season of
competition last year. Coach Jeff Aumend’s squad also posted a
best-ever six PacWest Conference wins and placed six players on
the all-conference teams. Named to the
All-PacWest second team were Theresa Campbell (sophomore
designated hitter, Great Falls, MT), Stephanie Cochrun (sophomore
infielder, Lake Stevens, WA), Terilee Ehnes (junior infielder,
Great Falls, MT), Layne Pavey (sophomore catcher, Spokane, WA),
and Joey Ehnes (sophomore infielder, Great Falls, MT). Megan
McCrae (sophomore pitcher, Brandon, Manitoba)
earned All-PacWest honorable mention honors.
That stable of
talent will return for the 2004 season as juniors and seniors with
at least two extensive years of college experience under their
belts. Campbell, Cochrun, Pavey, McCrae and Joey Ehnes have been
with the Yellowjackets since they were true freshmen and have
earned valuable playing experience. Terilee Ehnes transferred to
MSUB after playing two seasons in junior college.
Campbell led the
Yellowjackets with a .341 batting average in 2003, which was the
sixth-highest average in the conference. Pavey was the No. 2
ranked catcher in the PacWest after batting .280 with a team-best
.493 slugging percentage and four home runs. She ranked seventh
in the conference for slugging percentage and ninth for home runs.
Cochrun batted .339,
eighth-best in the conference and second-best on the team. She
also had a .973 fielding percentage while playing most of the
season at first base. Terilee Ehnes hit .319 for the season and
drove in a team-high 21 runs. Her sister Joey batted .277 with an
on-base percentage of .347. Joey also made 14 appearances as a
pitcher, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.79 ERA. McCrae was the
Jackets’ top pitcher, posting an 8-12 record with a 3.02 ERA in 19
starts.
The Yellowjackets
2003 fall schedule will include home-and-home double headers with
Dawson C.C., a tournament at North Idaho College, a second
Blue-White scrimmage in Kalispell, and home games against club
teams from University of Wyoming and Weber State. The
Yellowjackets will host Dawson C.C. on October 11, and the Wyoming
and Weber State teams on October 25. All games will be played at
Cenex Stadium. |
