MSU Billings
Invitational Stats and Results
BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings was 3-0
on the first day of its own softball invitational, securing the
No. 1 seed for Saturday’s bracket elimination play. The
Yellowjackets (11-22) received solid pitching performances from
juniors Megan McCrae and Joey Ehnes to defeat Valley City State,
Dawson CC, and Northern State University.
Ehnes struck out six in five innings of
shutout work in the Jackets’ first game against Valley City State,
a 9-0 win in five innings. Layne Pavey’s three-run home run in
the bottom of the fifth ended the game via the eight run rule.
Pavey was 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
Stephanie Cochrun, Theresa Campbell and Christy Wankel each had
two hits. Campbell drove in three RBI and scored twice. Cochrun
also scored two runs.
McCrae tossed three hitless innings against
Dawson CC in MSUB’s second game, striking out six of the 12
batters she faced. Cochrun finished the final two innings on the
mound, allowing three hits and one run. Campbell, Wankel and
Aysha Blatter each homered as the Jackets rolled to a 16-1 win in
five innings. Campbell and Wankel each drove in three runs. Cami
Rainey and Cochrun drove in two runs apiece. Blatter was 3-for-3
with three runs scored.
The Yellowjackets closed the day with a 4-1
decision over Northern State. McCrae went the distance for the
victory, striking out 10 in seven innings. She gave up just three
hits and one earned run. MSUB took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Sara Hanley’s groundout to second base plated Rainey, who had led
off the inning with a double. Campbell put the game out of reach
with a three-run home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom
of the sixth, giving MSUB a 4-0 advantage. The Wolves tacked on a
run in the top of the seventh for the final difference. For the
day, Campbell was 5-for-9 with nine RBI and five runs scored.
The Yellowjackets will play in semifinal game
#1 at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday as the No. 1 seed. Dawson CC and
Valley City State will square off at 10:30 a.m. in the final round
robin game. A VCSU win would give it the No. 2 seed and NSU the
No. 3 seed. A Dawson CC win would leave three teams at 1-2,
creating a tie breaker scenario in which run differential would
determine the seeding. Dawson would need to win by more than 10
runs in the 10:30 a.m. game to move up from the No. 4 seed.
Round Robin Standings (run differential
entering Saturday)
MSU Billings, 3-0 (+27)
Valley City, 1-1 (-6)
Northern State, 1-2 (-5)
Dawson CC, 0-2 (-16)
