Lady Yellowjacket Softball Team Takes Three at N. Idaho Tourney (Oct. 18, 2003)
COEUR D’ALENE, ID – The MSU Billings softball
team continued its unbeaten fall schedule Saturday with three wins
at the Northern Idaho College Tournament. The Yellowjackets used
fast offensive starts to defeat Northern Idaho 11-4, Eastern
Oregon 2-0, and Blue Mountain CC 7-3.
In the first game of the day, Megan McCrae
(Jr., Brandon, Manitoba) earned the win after scattering eight
hits over five innings and striking out five. The Yellowjackets
scored six runs in the first inning to blow the game open. Anna
Henderson (So., Frenchtown, MT) led the Yellowjacket offense,
going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Joey Ehnes (Jr., Great
Falls, MT), Christy Wankel (So., Great Falls, MT), Aysha Blatter
(Fr., Richland, WA) and Henderson all scored two runs in the game.
Ehnes went the distance in game two for the
shutout win over Eastern Oregon striking out eight while allowing
four hits in seven innings. Layne Pavey (Jr., Spokane, WA)
singled to drive in Sara Hanley (Jr., Kalispell, MT) in the fourth
inning to give Ehnes a one-run lead. Blatter added an insurance
run in the fifth with her first home run of the fall.
“We were really pleased with our offense
today,” said Yellowjacket head coach Jeff Aumend. “In two of the
three games we put up early runs which provided our pitchers with
good leads to work with.”
The Yellowjackets built another early lead
against Blue Mountain CC, scoring three runs in the first and
three in the second to open a 6-0 lead. That was enough for
pitcher Stephanie Cochrun (Jr., Lake Stevens, WA) who allowed
three hits and struck out three in seven innings for the win.
Hanley was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Ehnes, Rainey and
Hanley each scored twice in the game.
The Yellowjackets will hold a Blue-White
scrimmage in Kalispell Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. following a
free youth clinic. They will return to Cenex Stadium for the
Yellowjacket Fall Invitational next Saturday, hosting Dawson CC
and a club team from Weber State. |
