Lady Jackets Use Long Ball to Trounce Dawson CC (Oct. 11, 2003)
BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings softball team
hit six home runs Saturday afternoon in a double-header sweep of
Dawson Community College at Cenex Stadium. The Yellowjackets
posted wins of 18-1 and 6-1 for their third and fourth wins over
the Buccaneers in the last two weeks.
Terilee Ehnes (Sr., Great Falls, MT) sparked
a six-run second inning in game one with a towering three-run
homer to deep right field. Ehnes drove in Aysha Blatter (Fr..,
Richland, WA) and Cami Rainey (Jr., Terreton, ID). Just three
batters later, Theresa Campbell (Jr., Great Falls, MT) went deep
for a two-run blast to give the Jackets a 5-0 lead. Layne Pavey
(Jr., Spokane, WA) followed Campbell with a solo shot to
right-center for a 6-0 lead.
With all the run support she needed, Joey
Ehnes (Jr., Great Falls, MT) pitched three scoreless innings for
the win. She struck out three and allowed three hits before being
replaced by Stephanie Cochrun (Jr., Lake Stevens, WA) in the
fourth inning. Cochrun allowed three hits and one run in two
innings of work, striking out one. The Bucs’ Amy Taylor scored on
a Janey Anderson single in the fourth.
Terilee Ehnes homered again in the third
inning, driving in Rainey for her fifth RBI of the game. Ehnes
was 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. Sara Hanley (Jr.,
Kalispell, MT), Pavey, Cochrun, Blatter, and Rainey all scored two
runs apiece in the game.
The second game started as a pitchers’ dual
with the Yellowjackets’ Megan McCrae (Jr., Brandon, Manitoba) and
the Bucs’ Katie Kohring shutting down the opposing offenses
through the first two innings. Kohring didn’t allow a hit to the
first six batters she faced, but Christy Wankel (Great Falls, MT)
ended the scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the
third, driving in Joey Ehnes who had walked.
Following a groundout, Pavey launched her
second home run of the day to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.
That was more than enough for McCrae, who struck out ten batters
and allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings. She struck
out the side in the top of the sixth and gave way in the seventh
to Cochrun, who gave up one run on three hits. Kohring drove in
Danielle Armstrong on a one-out single before Cochrun retired the
final two batters to close the game. |
