Yellowjackets Avenge Loss with Double OT Victory (September 1, 2003)
ARCATA, CA – Just three days after a
heartbreaking last-minute loss at Humboldt State, the MSU Billings
men’s soccer team turned the tables with a 1-0 double overtime
victory over the Lumberjacks on Monday. Victor Sargent, a
freshman from Billings Senior HS, scored on a header 1:10 into the
second overtime to break a scoreless tie and give the
Yellowjackets their first win of the year. The Jackets leave
California 1-1-1 after the opening weekend.
“It was a great team effort,” said head coach
Doug Seigle. “Some of our guys weren’t on today, but the team
effort carried us. We still have some guys banged up with
injuries, but we fought through it and dominated the latter part
of the game and the overtime periods. Our guys just made up their
minds that they weren’t going to get beat today and it showed.”
Sargent scored his first collegiate goal 70
seconds into the second overtime after Robbie Timm (Sr., Park
City, UT) took a pass from Thomas Pertuit (Jr., Billings, MT) and
cut it back to Sargent in front of the net. Sargent headed the
ball past Lumberjack goalkeeper Barret Schwerin for the game
winner. Timm was given credit for an assist.
Yellowjacket goalkeeper Jess Feldtman (So.,
Lander, WY) saw his first action in a Yellowjacket uniform,
playing 111 minutes for the shutout win. He posted 4 saves on the
day, including three from close range. MSU Billings out-shot
Humboldt State 14-7 in Monday’s game and 31-17 overall in the two
games.
“Jess Feldtman made three phenomenal saves,”
said Seigle. “He made two tough saves in the second half and one
from point-blank range in the first overtime to keep the game
going. It was only about five yards in front of the net. I don’t
know how he got to it.”
The Yellowjackets will travel to Salt Lake
City to play three more games before returning to Billings. They
will be at this weekend’s tournament at Westminster College. MSUB
is scheduled to face Colorado Christian at 2:00 on Thursday, Biola
at 2:00 on Friday and Westminster at 2:30 on Saturday. |
