Yellowjacket Soccer Falls in Final Minute at Humboldt (August 29, 2003)
ARCATA, CA – The MSU Billings men’s soccer
team was seconds away from its second straight overtime game when
they gave up a goal off a corner kick to lose 2-1 at Humboldt
State on Friday. The Lumberjacks’ Dustin Kaatz headed in the ball
off a corner kick with just 18 seconds remaining on the clock to
break a 1-1 tie.
On Thursday, the Yellowjackets played Cal
State-Stanislaus to a 1-1 tie in the season opener for both
teams. The Jackets couldn’t hold on against the Jacks on Friday,
however, despite out shooting HSU 17-10 in the game.
“We felt that we dominated the game,” said
head coach Doug Seigle, whose Yellowjackets are 0-1-1 for the
season. “We out shot them, we had four more shots on goal…we just
made too many mistakes. Defensive mistakes killed us.”
The Yellowjackets took an early lead when A.J.
Reyes (Fr., MF, Quartz Hill, CA) found the back of the net just
17:59 into the game. MSUB held the lead until the 59th minute when the Lumberjacks’ Derek Dixon scored off a throw-in.
The game appeared to be heading to overtime for the second day in
a row when Kaatz’s header put an end to the day.
The Yellowjackets will take Saturday off,
practice on Sunday, and face Humboldt State in a rematch Monday
afternoon. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. Mountain
