BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings men’s soccer
team let a 1-0 halftime deficit balloon into a 4-1 loss to
Westminster College Sunday afternoon. It was the second time
Westminster has defeated the Yellowjackets this season, including
a 4-0 win in early September in Salt Lake City. The loss dropped
MSUB to 6-8-1 and improved Westminster to 9-7-0.
The Griffins found the net in the 19th minute on a Chad Gilbert goal. The score remained 1-0 for the
next 40 minutes of play with both defenses controlling the tempo.
Westminster’s Brian Fairbanks scored in the 59th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Yellowjackets clawed their way back into
the game on a Damian Wandler (Sr., North Platte, NE) goal in the
70th minute. It was Wandler’s first goal of the season
and was assisted by Dustin Kono (So., Aberdeen, SD).
The Yellowjackets couldn’t keep within
striking distance for long, however. The Griffins’ Xadier
Gonzalez scored goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes to put the game out of reach. Jess Feldtman (So., Lander,
WY) was in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing four goals and
making seven saves. Westminster out-shot the Yellowjackets 18-11
in the game and 10-6 in the second half.
MSU Billings is now idle until October 18
when the Yellowjackets travel to Bismarck to take on Si Tanka
University, formerly known as Huron University. That game will
close the Yellowjackets’ regular season. They will host Laramie
CC in an exhibition game on October 25.
