BELLINGHAM, WA – The MSU Billings men’s soccer
team was shut-out for the third time in as many games Monday
night, losing 2-0 at Western Washington. The Jackets gave up two
first-half goals in falling to 5-5-1 for the season. Western
Washington improved to 3-5-1.
“We made some stupid mistakes in the first
half and that’s what cost us,” said head coach Doug
Seigle. “We played better in the second half, but just
couldn’t put it away. We missed a penalty kick in the first
couple minutes of the game that could have changed the game, then
we had two shots in the second half hit the post. We had our
opportunities in the game, we just didn’t capitalize.”
Thomas Pertuit (Jr., Billings, MT) earned a penalty kick only
2:52 into the game, but hit the left post then missed wide right
after gaining the rebound. The Vikings broke the scoreless tie in
the 15th minute when Sean McCormick beat goalkeeper Jess
Feldtman (So., Lander, WY) to the bottom right corner of the
net from 12 yards out. WWU added another goal in the 38th minute for the final margin.
The Yellowjackets, who finish the three-game
trip through Washington without a goal, were out-shot 20-9.
Pertuit and A.J. Reyes (Fr., Quartz Hill, CA) each had two shots. Reyes
narrowly missed scoring with six minutes remaining in the game
when his header hit the left post.
The Yellowjackets will look to rebound from
their three-game losing streak with two games in Colorado this
weekend. They will play at Regis on Friday and at
Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday. Friday’s match against
Regis was to have pitted brothers Thomas and Oliver Pertuit
against each other, but Oliver will reportedly miss the game after
receiving his fifth yellow card of the season this weekend. |
