Yellowjackets in Eleventh Place after Two Rounds in
Nebraska (Apr. 19, 2004)
LINCOLN, NE – The Montana
State-Billings men’s golf team slipped from sixth to
eleventh place on Monday at the Northwest Region
Spring Head to Head Tournament hosted by
Nebraska-Kearney. The Yellowjackets shot a 304 in
the morning’s first round to position themselves in
sixth place, but a 324 afternoon score dropped them
five spots. Only 34 strokes separate the eleventh
place Jackets with tournament leader St. Cloud
State. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes
on Tuesday at the Firethorne Country Club in
Lincoln.
“The practice round on Sunday
was tough,” said head coach Roger Burckley. “The
wind was blowing about 50 miles per hour and we were
only able to get in nine holes. But the weather was
great today and we played our best round of the
season this morning.”
Four of the five Yellowjackets
had higher scores in the second round as their team
score grew by 20 strokes. After rounds of 76 and
77, Chris Haas is tied for 26th place at
153 to lead the Jackets. Eric Staab had the lowest
individual round for MSUB, carding a 74 in the first
round. He shot 82 in the second round and is tied
for 36th with a two-round total of 156.
St. Cloud State has a tenuous
hold on the team lead with a two-round total of
594. The tournament winner will likely be
determined in Tuesday’s final round as the next
three teams are within ten strokes. Chris Little
from St. Cloud State and Bobby Foster from Fort
Lewis are tied for the individual lead at an even
par 142.
