Yellowjackets Get Back on Winning Track with Win over Hawaii Pacific (Feb. 14, 2004)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings finished a tough three game week with a 104-83 victory over Hawaii Pacific Saturday night.  The Yellowjackets split two games with 17th-ranked BYU-Hawaii earlier in the week, but wrapped up the home stand with their fifteenth win of the season to improve to 15-7.  Jerett Skrifvars scored 28 points against the Sea Warriors to finish the week with 77 points.

The win improved the Jackets’ PacWest record to 6-5, giving them a game and a half lead over Hawaii Pacific (8-15, 5-7) for second place.  BYU-Hawaii won at Western New Mexico Saturday night to move to 9-2 in the conference.

Missing the nation’s leading 3-point shooter for the second game in a row, the Yellowjackets knocked down 14 from behind the arc Saturday night.  Sophomore guard Cameron Munoz missed his second game with an ankle injury suffered in Tuesday’s win over BYU-Hawaii.  Munoz leads both the PacWest and the nation in 3-pointers made per game, averaging 4.85 per night.

Dave Carse made a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to spark the Jackets outside shooting.  Carse also handed out six assists and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.  Buddy Windy Boy added four more 3-pointers, scoring 18 points.  Windy Boy also tied his career-high with six assists as he continues to become a larger part of the Yellowjackets’ offense.

MSU Billings shot 50 percent from the field in the first half to build a 49-32 lead at the break.  The Sea Warriors couldn’t get the difference to single digits in the second half as the Jackets hit nine 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

Skrifvars notched his PacWest-leading seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds.  Trae Fortier finished with 25 points for MSUB, connecting on 13 of 19 from the free throw line.  Jonathan Wiley, starting his second game of the year, scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds, both one shy of his career highs.

The Sea Warriors were led by Aaron Abrams’s 29 points.  He was 12 of 12 from the free throw line as HPU shot 83 percent from the charity stripe.

The Yellowjackets have three games in Hawaii next week, playing at Chaminade on Tuesday and Thursday and at Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday.  Ranked No. 9 in this week’s West Region poll, MSU Billings is still alive for a postseason berth.
