Lady Yellowjackets Fall to Unbeaten Whitman (September 22, 2002)
WALLA WALLA, WA – The MSU Billings
women’s soccer team fell to undefeated Whitman
College 4-2 Sunday morning. Whitman entered the
contest unbeaten and had not allowed a goal in its
first three games of the season.
Whitman wasted no time getting
on the scoreboard as McKenzie Hoffman scored in the
second minute of the game. Despite being outshot
14-3 in the opening period, the Yellowjackets
limited Whitman to Hoffman’s goal and trailed at the
half 1-0.
Whitman extended its lead to
2-0 in the 53rd minute when Katey Schmitz
chipped a 20-yard shot over goalkeeper Lacey
Humbracht. Humbracht finished the day with eight
saves.
MSU Billings struck back in the
58th minute when forward Heidi Robertson
scored on a pass from Mandy Reed, drawing the
Yellowjackets to within a goal. It marked the first
time this season that Whitman had been scored upon.
Whitman was able to put the
game away with goals in the 69th and 77th minutes, taking a 4-1 lead. MSU Billings scored a
late goal when Kelly Bryn scored her second goal of
the season in the 87th minute on a
20-yard straight on shot. Sara Otis was credited
with the assist.
MSU Billings fell to 1-6 on the
season while Whitman improved to 4-0. The
Yellowjackets will next face Rocky Mountain College
when they host the Bears at Yellowjacket Field on
Wednesday afternoon. |
