Lady Yellowjackets Finish First Weekend of Fall Season with Win
over Colorado State (September 18, 2002)
BILLINGS - The Yellowjackets softball team opened its non-traditional fall
season with 10 returnees and six newcomers who traveled to
Colorado for six games.
On Sunday the Jackets played at Division I Colorado State
University for the second year in a row and fared very well.
Sophomore Megan McCrae pitched a six-hitter to lead the Jackets to a 5-2 win in the first game of the
doubleheader on Sunday. With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the
seventh, freshman Michele Falsken's pinch-hit single with one out
scored Sara Hanley giving the Jackets the lead. Sophomore Joey
Ehnes added a two-run single to give the Jackets the 3-run lead
and McCrae held the Rams scoreless in the bottom of the seventh
for the victory.
"With such a young team, this is a huge win," said head
coach Jeff Aumend. "CSU is a large
school in a tough Division I conference. We had a sophomore
pitcher get the win and a freshman with a big pinch-hit to secure
the lead. We were elated with the victory."
Stephanie Cochrun gave up just seven hits in a 6-1 loss in the
second game of the doubleheader. Sara Hanley was 2-3 at the plate
in the loss.
On Saturday the Jackets tied one and lost three games in a four-game tournament at
Southern Colorado in Pueblo. Said
Aumend of the marathon day of softball, "The games were on
time limits and we had free substitution. We played well in three
of the four games and used all of our players." MSUB tied Regis 4-4, lost to Northern Colorado 8-4,
Southern Colorado 7-1 and Colorado - Colorado Springs, 7-1.
On the weekend, Falsken was a scorching 8-11 (.727) and Joey Ehnes
was 6 for 18 (.333).
The Jackets will hold a public
Blue-White Scrimmage on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m. in their next outing. |
