From 1990-98, Helmer was the head
girls coach at Skyview, compiling a 110-82 record.
His varsity teams qualified for the state tournament
in seven of his nine seasons, placing fourth in 1995
and second in 1996.
"Our program is fortunate to find an assistant
with the enthusiasm and amount of experience that
Darryl has," said Ridgeway. "He has a great
background of building successful teams and has
produced players who have been very successful at
our level."
Helmer was a finalist for the Montana Coaches
Association Coach of the Year Award in both 1995 and
1996. He guided his 1996 team to a runner-up finish
in the State Class AA Tournament, held in Alterowitz
Gymnasium.
While at Skyview, Helmer produced several college
players, including former Yellowjacket standouts
Shiloh Schwab and Betsy Morrison. In addition to his
coaching duties at MSU Billings, Helmer will
continue to teach math at Skyview High School.
Helmer earned his Bachelor’s Degree in secondary
math education from the University of Montana. He is
nearing the completion of this Master’s of Science
in Sport Management from MSU Billings.
Coach Helmer has been married to his wife,
Sandra, for 19 years. They reside in Billings and
have one son, Cully, who is 13.
