Like many young adults, Stephanie Slavin had no idea what she wanted to focus on when she first enrolled at Montana State University Billings.

That quickly changed after taking a general art course and being introduced to photography. Slavin found her passion.

“It wasn’t until I entered MSUB and picked up a camera that I realized how much I loved photography,” she said.

The Laurel native has come a long way from not knowing anything about photography.

Slavin, 26, is graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art and was awarded Best in Show at the annual Juried Student Art Show on Thursday for her piece, “My Roots The Monster in Me.”

She said the award gave her a boost in confidence.

“Just a few days ago I was questioning my ability as an artist and I was considering if I should really be doing this because I had some really bad reviews of my senior show,” Slavin said. “So, I was really shocked to get Best in Show.”

She plans on pursuing a Master’s to be able to teach art and photography at the university level.

The Juried Art Show will be on display at MSUB’s Northcutt Steele Gallery through May 4. The guest juror, Dean Adams, from Montana State University, announced the following selections for awards:

Three Honorable Mention awards: Michael Jones, "Peep Show"; Angel Shandy, "Untitled"; Marsha Stewart, "Lovely–She Series."

2D Merit of Excellence: Brenna Lacy, "Holy Hand"

3D Merit of Excellence: Fred Muller, "Vessel 2"

Scholarships: Two students were awarded the Eric Robert Anderson Memorial Endowed Scholarship (which is renewable): John Allenbaugh and Kari Troncoso. This award honors students who are members of the Art Students' League with a GPA over 3.0 who have demonstrated exceptional service to the student organization and to the department.
