Artist Statement
My work is an activity of investigation. It is about the way objects/surfaces engage or break up the environment. I am interested in illusion of material configuration and how it leads me to learn something new.
My personal research includes a quest of forms, content, and elements that provoke several associations. Each time I look at something I see it differently, and each time I view my work there is a new experience. I challenge myself with a large variety of interests, and in the work there is always more than one thing to think and talk about. This allows me to make art about many things and keeps my approach fresh and light. I strive less to be understood than to understand.
Is there anything about your philosophy as an artist that you would like to share with anyone viewing your art?
I am interested in illusion and learning.
Biography
Lawrence P. Anderson holds an MFA degree in Printmaking and Drawing from the University of Kentucky and a BFA degree in Art-Printmaking from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Francis Marion University, Florence, SC. He instructs Graphic Design and Drawing courses. Lawrence has worked as a Design Artist in Nebraska, Kentucky and South Dakota. He received a South Dakota Visual Artist Fellowship in 1995, and is included in over 40 public collections. Professor Anderson has exhibited in over 120 regional, national and international exhibitions. His teaching experience also includes the Head of Graphic Design and Chair of the Department of Art at the University of South Dakota, the Head of Art and Gallery Director at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield, and teaching and gallery positions at the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and University of Nebraska. He was selected by the Kentucky Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts to be an Artist-In-The-Schools in Kentucky for four years, and by the Bureau of Prisons in Kentucky and South Dakota to instruct drawing and painting. Professor Anderson was also an Interim Registrar and Preparator for the Sioux City Art Center and the University of South Dakota.
