Waterman, Wilson, McRae Scholarships

The annual MSU Billings Graduate Studies Endowment Scholarships in honor of Drs. C. Robert Waterman, Helen Wilson and Robert McRae will be awarded each spring. Outstanding graduate students will receive $1,150 each for the academic year as Waterman, Wilson and McRae Scholars. Need or current financial aid will not be considered in making these awards. 

Qualifications and Criteria for Selection

    • Graduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 and a desirable undergraduate record
    • Enrolled in a minimum of 9 graduate credits per semester
    • Degree candidacy status
    • Evidence of outstanding scholarship, research, and creativity
    • Commitment to community service and related accomplishments
    • Professional experience and leadership
    • Applications are due by February 1 each year

Stepping Forward Foundation Scholarship – Graduate

In 2015, the Stepping Forward Foundation established a scholarship at MSU Billings to provide financial assistance to students who have a well-thought-out educational plan and/or career goals, as well as a strong desire to succeed. 

Qualifications and Criteria for Selection

    • Graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
    • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 graduate credits per semester
    • Definite financial need
    • Applications are due by February 1 each year

OCHE Research Fellows Program

The OCHE Research Fellows Program is designed to give graduate students the opportunity to research an area of interest under the mentorship of a Board of Regents ARSA team member and complement their other program experiences. Fellows participate in project development, data analysis (both qualitative and quantitative), basic research in key initiative areas, policy design & implementation, and general campus outreach. This is a tremendous opportunity for current graduate students to receive academic credit and a $1,000 stipend while also gaining valuable experience and exposure at the highest administrative level of the Montana University System (MUS). 

Qualifications and Criteria for Selection

    • Academic experience (B.A./B.S. required; progress toward master’s/doctoral degree preferred)
    • Data analysis (coursework in statistics and/or data analysis preferred) or research skills
    • Outstanding written and oral communication, and the ability to collaborate with a diverse team
    • Demonstrated initiative and ability to conduct research with minimal supervision
    • Knowledge of and appreciation for the mission of public higher education in Montana
    • Applicant must be a current graduate student at a Montana University System institution

Application Process

    • Determine several topics of interest from the Project Areas on the OCHE Research Fellows website
    • Submit the following documents as directed on the OCHE Research Fellows website
      • A cover letter (maximum two pages):
        1. Outlining your interest and qualifications
        2. identifying 3 project areas from the list below that interest you and a few sentences about how you’d address each in a research paper/project
      • A comprehensive resume or curriculum vitae
      • A letter of support from a faculty mentor who can confirm your qualifications for the Fellowship and commit to working with you and ARSA staff

Graduate Research & Opportunity Awards

Graduate studies is excited to support the research and professional development of MSU Billings graduate students. Please complete this form to be considered for a research award. Funded activities include support for research activities, presentations at conferences, and professional development. Please note that it is anticipated that several awards will be funded each semester, and the presentation of research at a conference will be given priority. Funding amounts will be determined in collaboration with the faculty graduate committee, but typically will not exceed $500.
