Yellowjacket Emergency Pantry (YEP)
Hunger and Food Insecurity on Campus and in the Community
After conducting a needs assessment during the Spring 2016 semester, the Food Insecurity Committee determined that there is a need for a student food pantry on campus. Results showed that thirty-four percent of students reported that there has been a time when they did not have enough food for themselves or their household and twenty-six percent reported that they have had to skip a meal due to a lack of food. Barriers such as poverty and food insecurity can prohibit student from achieving a college degree.
Food Insecurity is not just a problem at MSU Billings, universities and colleges across the United States have been looking at food insecurity as a barrier to student success, with over 300 colleges and universities joining the College and University Food Bank Alliance. While there are community resources available, it may be difficult for student to access them due to transportation, scheduling, and eligibility guidelines. YEP’s purpose is to help students with their immediate needs while also linking them with long term solutions.
