M 131 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II

Course Description

3 credits
Prerequisite: M 130 or consent of instructor.
Stresses topics in fractions, ratios, and proportional relationships; the number system; expressions and equations; statistics and probability; and functions as defined by the Common Core State Standards for mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand problems involving rational and real numbers, ratios, 3-dimensional geometry, algebraic equations and functions, and statistics and probability,
  • Employ multiple strategies to solve problems involving rational and real numbers, ratios, 3-dimensional geometry, algebraic equations and functions, and statistics and probability,
  • Understand the importance of building conceptual foundations and non-algorithmic thinking for these topics before introducing algorithms to young children,
  • Recognize that there are multiple ways in which these topics can be conceptualized and taught, and
  • Anticipate points of potential confusion for young learners.
