Wayne Hansen '52 is this year's recipient of the MSU Billings Alumni Merit Medallion. Hansen received his Associate Degree from MSU Billings on his way to receiving his DDS at the University of Nebraska. After serving in the Air Force, where he flew with the Strategic Air Command and served as the personal dentist to an Air Force general, he opened his own dentistry practice. He has continued his affiliation with MSU Billings as a generous donor of resources and time. He was instrumental in helping re-establish the men's baseball program a few years ago.
Darrell Kipp '70 is the recipient of this year's Recognition for Exceptional Achievement Award from MSU Billings. Kipp is the co-founder and director of the Piegan Institute on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation, which provides a language immersion school for its students through the middle school. This school has been a model for language immersion programs around the globe. Besides a degree from MSU Billings, Kipp has a Master's of Education from Harvard University and a Master's of Fine Art in Writing from Vermont College.
Florence Garcia '74, '80 was inaugurated as president of Fort Peck Community College on May 25. Originally from Wolf Point, Florence earned her doctorate in Adult and Higher Education from Montana State University-Bozeman and served as the Academic Vice-President at Fort Peck Community College before beginning her tenure as President. She was a Director and adjunct faculty member at MSU-Bozeman and MSU-Billings, a high school teacher, and was a Dean of Student Services at Metropolitan State University in St Paul MN prior to her current position.
Andrew Small '74 is the recipient of the MSU Billings Distinguished Alumnus Award. Small is a
part owner and lawyer for BlueDog, Paulson and Small based in Minneapolis, Minn. He
has been an advocate for the rights of American Indians through the court system and
has been instrumental in enforcing the Indian Child Welfare Act. He has served as
general counsel and special counsel for 13 tribes and has been admitted to practice
in 14 tribal jurisdictions throughout Indian Country, as well as Circuit Court of
Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
Dennis Schuld '76, '79 is the recipient of the 2012 Ronald P. Sexton Award for Professional Commitment. Dennis has spent his entire career serving MSU Billings through the Information Technology department. For the last 36 years he has been adapting and implementing new technology for the university.
Lisa Lombardy '83 was awarded the Recognition for Exceptional Achievement by MSU Billings Alumni Association. Lombardy is well known throughout the Billings community for her music and theatrical performances. During the day she works as a registered nurse at the Billings Clinic Outpatient Surgery Center, but she devotes just as much time and energy to the performing arts in the area. Lombardy received her music degree from MSU Billings while she was working the night shift at the hospital. She continued to pursue her music passion and received her Master of Music degree from the University of Arizona. She has received numerous awards for her music and is currently preparing the next generation of performers by providing private lessons to area youth.
John Cech '85 is a recipient of the MSU Billings Recognition for Exceptional Achievement Award.
Cech currently serves as Deputy Commissioner for Two-Year and Community College Education
for the Montana University System in Helena. Previously, he was the Dean of MSU Billings
College of Technology.
Jeff Flaten '88 has joined Stockman Bank in Billings as vice president and compliance director. He will oversee and manage the compliance department for all 25 Stockman Bank locations.
Tamara Grimm '91 was awarded the Golden Apple by the Billings School District for her patience,
energy and compassion for her students. Tamara is a special education teacher at
Lewis and Clark Middle school and is also involved with Special Olympics.
Kevin Kraft '93 has been promoted to Senior Vice President at Yellowstone Bank in Billings.
Gene Wehrman '93 and his wife, Mildred, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner. Gene was an airline pilot with Big Sky Airlines and Mildred was the owner and operator of Toddle Town Daycare Center for 37 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
Heather Ostermiller '96 has joined Re/Max of Billings. She specializes in residential real estate.
Deanna Langman '00 is the PTAC Subcenter program manager for Big Sky Economic Development in Billings. She will work with businesses in Eastern Montana to help them contract with the federal and state governments.
Kathleen Anderson '01 a teacher at Big Sky Elementary School in Billings was presented with the Golden Apple Award by the Billings School District. She is a fourth grade teacher and has a reputation for being tough yet caring while instilling a strong work ethic in her students.
Carey Ratzlaff '01 has been promoted to general manager of Big Sky Linen and Uniform in Billings. She joined the company nearly 10 years ago, bringing 15 years of management experience. She holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
Craig Vihinen '01, branch manager at U.S. Bank in Billings was awarded the company's quarterly
Pinnacle Award for top performance during the first quarter of 2012.
Kris Eklund '02 was promoted to vice president at Western Security Bank in Billings. He has been with the bank for nine years.
Melisa Slunaker '03 has been promoted to assistant vice president at Western Security Bank in Billings. She has been with the bank for eight years.
Amy Iverson '04 has been promoted to manager at the Billings office of Galusha, Higgins & Galusha. She has been with GHG since 2004 as a tax accountant.
Kelly McCandless '07 has been promoted to communications manager for the Billings Chamber of Commerce. She joined the Chamber in 2008 and has worked as guest services manager and leisure sales manager. She has a degree in organizational and mass communication.
Shannon Morrow '07 is beginning grad school this fall at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is currently living in Quincy, California.
Katherine Bermes Meyers '08 has been awarded the Professional in Human Resources certification by the Human Resource Certification Institute. She is the employment coordinator at EBMS in Billings.
Alexis Laurie '09 received the 2012 Commitment to Caring Award for Social Services Director from
Eagle Cliff Manor in Billings. Laurie has been employed in long-term care for nine
David Henneberry '10 has been promoted to human resource officer at Stockman Bank in Billings. He is responsible for assisting in the coordination of the Human Resource functions for all 24 Stockman Bank locations. David has been with the bank since 2009 and earned his associated degree in human resource management in 2010 from the College of Technology. He is also certified as a Professional in Human Resources.
Patrick Rivers '10 has joined the Billings office of Galusha, Higgins & Galusha as a tax accountant. He will focus on tax preparation, audits of government, non-profits and commercial enterprises and financial statement review and compilations.
Blade Stiller '11 is a personal banker at Rocky Mountain Bank in Billings. He has more than 10 years of customer service experience and holds a degree in marketing from MSU Billings.
